2014 SUMMER/FALL SPORTS COVERAGE ON CBC
CBC’s tradition of quality storytelling and world-class sports broadcasting continues in the 2014 season with a full calendar of events that will connect Canadians with the athletes that represent them on the world stage.

CBC is Canada’s Olympic Network and home of amateur sports and big events including FIFA World Cup™, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, ISU Figure Skating, Championship Speed Skating, the Pan Am and ParaPan Am Games and the Olympics, as well as several other marquee sports properties throughout the summer and fall of 2014.

Coinciding with the brand promise that Canadians will never meet an athlete for the first time on the podium, viewers will get to know Canadian athletes as they prepare for and compete in the biggest international events through CBC’s multi-platform coverage that will follow these athletes on their journey.

The road to the Olympics in 2016 begins with the Commonwealth Games this July on CBC and continues with the Pan Am and ParaPan Am Games in 2015. CBC’s coverage of events like these remains ahead of the technology curve and provides Canadians with extensive multiplatform content available free of charge anywhere and anytime they want.

2014 FIFA WORLD CUP BRAZIL™ (JUNE 12-JULY 13)

It’s everyone’s game and CBC is inviting Canadians to be part of it. The beautiful game returns to CBC/Radio-Canada with multi-platform coverage of 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ from June 12-July 13.

Scott Russell, Craig Forrest and Jon Collins will host the final match of each day’s coverage as well as CBC’s prime time coverage with in-depth analysis and highlights of the best moments from the day’s action. CBC will also provide daytime pre- and post-game coverage from the studio with host Andi Petrillo and analysts Nigel Reed and Craig Forrest providing previews and immediate reaction to each day’s matches. Canadian Women’s National Team Coach, John Herdman, will join the daytime coverage in the second week of the tournament. In addition, CBC’s Brenda Irving and David Amber will be on the ground in Brazil providing additional insight on the atmosphere in and around the host cities through broadcast and social media.

Through agreements with Sportsnet, TLN, Fairchild /Talentvision and TVA, CBC/Radio-Canada has made sure that Canadians will have unprecedented access - in multiple languages including English, French, Mandarin, Cantonese, Italian and Spanish - to every minute of every game live on TV, online at cbc.ca/fifaworldcup and through CBC’s Brazil 2014 App for iOS and Android devices, available June 5. In all, CBC will carry more than 230 hours of television coverage from 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™.

CBC’s best-in-class production, working alongside FIFA, will provide viewers with a multi-feed viewing experience to provide a unique view of the games, the 12 cities in which the games are played and the compelling storylines produced by the global event.

CBC’s dedicated website, cbcsports.ca/fifaworldcup, will keep users updated on the latest news, notes and highlights from each of the 32 teams, their players and their match-ups as well as overall tournament broadcast schedules and more.

Leading up to and throughout FIFA World Cup™, fans are encouraged to show their passion for the game by sharing photos and videos demonstrating what makes them Canada’s Super Fans using #SuperFan.
In addition, CBC is proud to partner with CIBC to bring Canadians CIBC Soccer Nation, a five-city viewing party tour each weekend throughout FIFA World Cup™, bringing the beautiful game to audiences in communities across the country. SPRUCE MEADOWS (VARIOUS EVENTS IN JUNE, JULY AND SEPTEMBER)

CBC’s tradition of broadcasting high performance international show jumping events from Spruce Meadows continues in 2014 with more marquee events on CBC-TV and online at cbcsports.ca. Coverage kicks off on the June 7-8 weekend with the RBC Grand Prix presented by Rolex, the ATCO Structures and Logistics Cup and the Nexen Cup Derby. Marquee events continue throughout the summer leading up to the final weekend, September 13-14, featuring prime time coverage of the BMO Nations Cup. CBC’s broadcast team for these events will include hosts Scott Russell and Bruce Rainnie and analysts Deanna Phelan, Ian Alison and Signa Butler.

CALGARY STAMPEDE (JULY 4-13)

CBC has partnered with Rogers to extend coverage and access to live daily broadcasts of the 2014 Calgary Stampede through Sportsnet and CityTV Calgary. CBC will continue to bring Canadians an all-access pass to “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” with online and nightly recap shows. Live coverage kicks off with the Stampede Parade on CityTV Calgary and online at cbcsports.ca on Friday, July 4 followed by a national rebroadcast on CBC-TV on Saturday, July 5.

CBC will provide prime time television coverage of the final weekend including Wild Card Saturday on July 12 and Showdown Sunday on July 13. CBC’s Ron MacLean returns for another year of Calgary Stampede coverage as host of CBC’s weekend broadcasts as well as Scott Oake and Mellisa Hollingsworth calling the action throughout the competition. More broadcast details including additional talent information will be available closer to the start of the event.

PAN AM GAMES ONE YEAR COUNTDOWN (JULY 10)

CBC/Radio-Canada is Canada’s home for the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games in July and August 2015, respectively. July 10, 2014 represents the start of the one year countdown to the Pan Am Games. More information regarding CBC/Radio-Canada’s related programming will be available in the coming weeks.

2014 COMMONWEALTH GAMES (JULY 23-AUGUST 3)

CBC is the exclusive Canadian broadcaster of the XX Commonwealth Games from Glasgow, Scotland beginning July 23. This multi-sport event involving more than 4,500 athletes from 70 Commonwealth nations is viewed as the third-largest of its kind after the Olympics and Asian Games, respectively. The Commonwealth Games represent the unofficial beginning of the journey to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for Canadian athletes, a path that will take them through the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Through an agreement between Glasgow 2014, the Commonwealth Games Association of Canada and CBC, Canadians will have access to multi-platform coverage throughout the 12-day event. CBC TV, News, radio and online platforms will combine to provide Canadians with daily coverage, live online streaming content, highlights and reports. In all, CBC will provide Canadians with a total of 15 hours of coverage across all platforms every day throughout the competition including every Canadian medal performance, marking the most coverage ever for a Commonwealth Games. Scott Russell will anchor CBC’s coverage from Glasgow with Brenda Irving and Mark Lee joining him from CBC headquarters in Toronto.

FIFA U-20 WOMEN’S WORLD CUP CANADA (AUGUST 5-24)

The soccer world will set its sights on Canada in August as the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada brings the top female players to Moncton, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal from August 5-24. As Official Broadcaster, CBC has reached an agreement to sub-license coverage to Sportsnet providing Canadians with additional touch points to the event.

Canada is expected to field a strong team in this competition and CBC’s coverage includes each of Team Canada’s preliminary round games in addition to the Quarter-Final and Semifinal rounds as well as the Bronze Medal Final and Gold Medal Final games from Montreal on August 24. CBC will produce a preshow ahead of each game broadcast on CBC-TV and cbcsports.ca.

ROGERS CUP TENNIS (AUGUST 9-10)

The top tennis players in the world are heading to Canada this August for the only Canadian stop on the WTA and ATP tours, the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank. CBC has exclusive live Canadian coverage of the final weekend from both the men’s and women’s tournaments in Toronto and Montreal, respectively, including the semifinals on Saturday, August 9 and the finals on Sunday, August 10 on CBC-TV and cbcsports.ca. Elliotte Friedman will host CBC’s coverage while Bruce Rainnie will call the action for the men’s tournament and Scott Oake and Tracy Austin will provide play-by-play for the women’s competition. Brenda Irving and David Amber will provide reports from court level throughout the event.

KRAFT HOCKEYVILLE (SEPTEMBER)

Sylvan Lake, Alberta was crowned Kraft Hockeyville 2014 this past April. In addition to a $100,000 arena upgrade, the community will receive a visit from CBC and host a 2014-15 NHL pre-season game between the Calgary Flames and the Phoenix Coyotes this September.

The community rallied after the roof the local hockey arena collapsed in mid-January to encourage their neighbouring communities and all of Alberta to vote Sylvan Lake into the running of the Kraft Hockeyville contest. CBC will be there to celebrate the victory this fall.

RBC SPORTS DAY IN CANADA (NOVEMBER 29)

RBC Sports Day in Canada returns for a fifth annual celebration of sport and active living across Canada in November 2014. Canadians are encouraged to get out and get active on November 29 to celebrate RBC Sports Day in Canada by organizing or participating in registered events in their communities. CBC will broadcast live from select events across the country throughout the day.
