5.3 MILLION CANADIANS TUNED IN TO ENGLISH TV COVERAGE OF THE SOCHI 2014 PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES OVER THE FIRST THREE DAYS

The Canadian Paralympic Committee’s Broadcast and Digital Media Consortium, led by CBC, offers more than 90 hours of fully accessible TV broadcasts and more than 250 hours of digital streaming across all platforms

The opening weekend of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games drew 15 per cent of the Canadian population to the English-language television coverage provided by the CBC-led Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) Broadcast and Digital Media Consortium. Between Friday, March 7 and Sunday, March 9, 5.3 million Canadians watched at least part of the TV coverage, including Friday’s Opening Ceremony.

Through the CPC’s Consortium, Canadians have access to more Paralympic coverage than ever before with more than 90 hours of fully accessible TV broadcasts as well as more than 250 hours of digital streaming across all platforms including four separate venue feeds offering live streaming of Alpine, Nordic, Sledge Hockey and Curling venues along with English-language commentary.

CBC/Radio-Canada leads the creation of broadcast content for the CPC’s Broadcast Consortium which also airs on Sportsnet and Accessible Media Inc. (AMI), with Yahoo Sports Canada and SendtoNews providing additional coverage. Additionally, CBC News Network, local CBC News programs and CBC Radio continue to provide updates on the latest news and results from Sochi throughout each day of competition.

Coverage on TV and online at cbc.ca/paralympics continues today and throughout the week leading up to the Closing Ceremony on Sunday, March 16. In addition to live streaming video, cbc.ca/paralympics features athlete profiles, how-to videos for select sports, blog posts from CBC commentators and video-on-demand content.

Canadians can follow Team Canada through the CPC’s free “Canadian Paralympic Team” mobile app, available for iOS from the iTunes Store and Android via the Google Play Store. In addition to TV and online coverage from CBC/Radio-Canada, Canadians can engage with the broadcasts throughout the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games online in English on Twitter @cbcsports (#paralympics and #sochi2014) and at facebook.com/cbcsports and in French at ici.radio-canada.ca/sports and on Twitter at @RC_Sports and on Facebook at facebook.com/radiocanada.sports.
