CBC SHATTERS ITS OWN AVERAGE ONLINE AUDIENCE RECORD FOR A LIVE EVENT AS MORE THAN 625,000 CANADIANS WATCHED FRIDAY'S CANADA VS. USA OLYMPIC MEN'S HOCKEY SEMIFINAL ONLINE

The live online average audience for Friday’s Canada/USA game surpassed the previous record of 325,000 viewers, set by Thursday’s Women’s Ice Hockey gold medal game

Nearly 13 million Canadians watched at least some part of the Women’s Ice Hockey gold medal game between Canada and the USA on Thursday, including more than 3.1 million via online stream

Yesterday’s Men’s Ice Hockey semifinal game between Canada and the USA registered the highest online viewing audience ever to a CBC live event, with a (preliminary) average audience of more than 625,000 on CBC and Radio-Canada’s desktop and mobile devices combined. This beats the previous record of 325,000, set during the Women’s Ice Hockey gold medal game, also featuring Canada and the USA.

So far, 32.8 million Canadians (95 per cent of the population) have tuned in to any content from the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games on either a French or English platform since February 6, an increase of about 120,000 over Day 12 (February 19). Notably, the number of Canadians who have watched Olympic content online increased by more than one million on Day 13 (February 20), bringing the total to just over 8.6 million (1 in 3 Canadians) since February 6.

Day 13 (Thursday, Feb. 20):
•Almost 13 million Canadians (or more than 1 in 3 Canadians) tuned in to watch at least some part of the Canada vs. USA Women’s Ice Hockey gold medal game live on CBC from 12 - 2:55 p.m. ET, the highest reach for any event so far these Games.

Of these 13 million, an impressive 3.1 million tuned in to watch an online stream - the highest digital reach for any event so far these games.
The peak minute on CBC was during the final minutes of the game, with 6.378 million viewers at 2:51 p.m. ET.
With a share of 63 per cent, almost two thirds of all the TV tuning from 12 - 2:55 p.m. ET was to the Women’s Ice Hockey gold medal game.

•More Canadians tuned in to Olympic content on Day 13 than on any day of the Games so far, with a daily reach of 24.4 million. This exceeds the reach of the second highest day by more than 900,000 viewers (February 16, which featured the Canada vs. Finland Men’s Ice Hockey game).

Olympic Daytime had a 2+ combined audience of 3.4 million, the highest weekday audience for the 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. ET block so far.

•Almost 6.3 million Canadians tuned in to watch the Women’s Curling gold medal curling match (Canada vs. Sweden) live on CBC from 8:30 - 11:10 a.m. ET, with almost half a million of those watching an online stream.
