The first day of competition at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games saw some exciting, high-flying action from the rink and slopes of Sochi. Canadians are off to an impressive start with athletes qualifying for the medal rounds, while others are still in contention in qualifying rounds. With the debut of two new Olympic sports, Slopestyle and Team Figure Skating, Canadians are at the top of the heap and positioning themselves for Canada’s first Olympic medals going into the weekend.
 
TONIGHT ON OLYMPIC PRIMETIME (7 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBC-TV):
Join host Ron MacLean as he guides Canadians through the first day of competition in Sochi. Highlights include Mark McMorris and Snowboard Slopestyle qualifying results, the debut of the team figure skating event, and ‘mogul mania’ with the three Dufour-Lapointe sisters. Q’s Jian Ghomeshi, on assignment for Olympic Primetime, interviews Canada’s flag bearer, women’s ice hockey legend Hayley Wickenheiser. And Canadian Chef de Mission Steve Podborski will also drop by to provide us with an update on the state of Team Canada heading into the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Toronto-born Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Fefe Dobson (@fefedobson) premieres her “Fresh Tracks” track, Celebrate during tomorrow night’s show.

SNOWBOARD: MEN’S AND LADIES’ SLOPESTYLE QUALIFICATION
In Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle, Quebec-born Maxence Parrot put down the top run for Team Canada and sits 1st after qualification, automatically qualifying for Saturday, Feb. 8’s final (12:30 a.m. ET). Montreal’s Sebatien Toutant has also punched his ticket to the final, making for a strong Canadian contingent.
Regina’s Mark McMorris sits in 7th place after a fall in his first run, and along with Charles Reid, will have to compete in the semi-final to qualify for the final.
B.C’s Spencer O’Brien finished in the top four in the Women’s Slopestyle qualification runs, and has automatically advanced through to the final on Sunday, Feb. 9 (4:15 a.m. ET).
 
FREESTYLE SKIING: LADIES’ MOGULS QUALIFICATION
Three Canadian sisters, Chloe, Justine and Maxime Dufour-Lapointe have all qualified for Saturday, Feb. 8’s final (1 p.m. ET). Chloe had an outstanding qualifying run, finishing in 2nd place, while Justine finished in 3rd and Maxime in 8th place. Canadian Audrey Robichaud also advanced to Saturday’s medal round, finishing in 9th place.
 
FIGURE SKATING: MEN’S SHORT AND PAIRS TEAM SHORT PROGRAMS
Canada is in 2nd place after the Men’s and Pairs Short Program.
Three time reigning world champion Patrick Chan skated into 3rd place after the Men’s Short Program.
World bronze medalists Megan Duhamel and Eric Radford skated into 2nd place following the Pairs Short Program.
