THIS LABOUR DAY, FALL BACK INTO IT WITH CBC RADIO ONE'S NEW SEASON OF GREAT PROGRAMMING

Two listener favourites celebrate anniversaries: Vinyl Café marks 20 years on the air this season, while As It Happens turns 45!

Beginning September 2, Anna Maria Tremonti is back on the air with The Current and a new theme for the season, while Jian Ghomeshi kicks off a “September to Remember” on Q

Today CBC Radio One announced the start of its new fall season, launching on Monday, September 2 with one-of-a-kind programming encompassing current affairs, news, science and technology, arts and comedy. The Current with Anna Maria Tremonti kicks off its season with a new themed series entitled Project Money and a documentary report on a B.C. lottery winner on a mission to change the fortunes of his town. Q with Jian Ghomeshi launches its “September to Remember” programming featuring interviews with high-profile actors and directors appearing at the Toronto International Film Festival. And David Common brings his strong editorial experience in the field to CBC Radio One’s World Report as the new anchor beginning September 2.

This year also marks notable anniversaries for two signature CBC Radio One shows. As it Happens, the popular weekday current affairs program hosted by Carol Off and Jeff Douglas, celebrates its 45th season while Stuart McLean marks his 20th year of telling stories about the misadventures of record store owner Dave on Vinyl Cafe. Returning favourites to the Radio One lineup include White Coat, Black Art and This Is That, while CBC Radio One‘s recently launched program The 180 returns with host Jim Brown bringing listeners diverse voices and opinions that seek to challenge commonly accepted views.

This season’s CBC Massey Lectures series features bestselling author Lawrence Hill and his book “Blood: The Stuff of Life.” And Canada Reads returns with host Jian Ghomeshi leading the lively literature competition that pits books chosen by well-known Canadians against one another. Marketing maven Arlene Dickinson, and one of the Dragons on CBC-TV‘s Dragons’ Den, will also add radio host to her list of talents with a special Labour Day show. As an entrepreneur, investor and TV star, Arlene Dickinson has a front-row seat to Canadian entrepreneurship. She’s learned that entrepreneurship is about more than business. It’s a lifestyle choice. In this one-hour special, Arlene explores what it means to live life “all in” as an entrepreneur.

CBC Radio One’s fall season kicks off on Labour Day; highlights for the season include:

The Current with Anna Maria Tremonti (weekdays at 8:30 a.m./9 NT) returns on September 2, and on September 3, launches a new season-long series, Project Money. Money is a powerful force. Other highlights include: Anna Maria Tremonti’s interview - a Canadian exclusive - with young Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai on the first anniversary of her shooting by the Taliban (October 9); a guest hosting stint by Canadian improv icon Colin Mochrie (Whose Line Is It Anyway?) on September 13; and a special Project Money themed episode guest hosted by Canadian personal finance guru Gail Vaz-Oxlade (Til Debt Do Us Part) on November 1.

Q with Jian Ghomeshi (weekdays at 10 a.m. and 10 p.m./10:30 NT) kicks off its new season with a “September to Remember” featuring high-profile interviews with actors and filmmakers taking part in the Toronto International Film Festival. Other September highlights include an exclusive interview from Beijing with outspoken and inventive Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, plus Jian talks with John Mayer, Neko Case, Billie Jean King, Margaret Atwood,UFC head Dana White and former Liberal Party leader Michael Ignatieff. On September 26, Q host Jian Ghomeshi will record a special live show in Montreal during the Pop Montreal Festival featuring musical performances from Patrick Watson and his new orchestral project, Orchestre Cinéma L’Amour, and hotly tipped art-pop band Braids.

David Common joins World Report as the new anchor on Monday, September 2. One of CBC News’ flagship programs, World Report airs every weekday morning at 5, 6, 7 & 8 a.m., beginning at 6 a.m. in the Maritimes, and 6:30 a.m. NT on CBC Radio One.

Radio One Local Morning shows continue to excel in the ratings, ranking in the Top 3 in 20 of the 23 Radio One markets across Canada and number one in 12 of Canada’s largest radio markets including Halifax, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver.

Among Radio One’s weekend highlights, host Brent Bambury is back with the fourth season of Day 6 (Saturday at 10 a.m. / 10:30 NT) giving listeners a surprising take on the week that was. The weekly magazine show blends the best of news, current affairs, pop culture, the net, lifestyle and leisure.

This season’s special programming includes the 52nd year of The Massey Lectures. Airing in November on Ideas, The CBC Massey Lectures will feature renowned author Lawrence Hill and his book Blood: The Stuff of Life.
