CBC'S MARKETPLACE INVESTIGATES THE UNHEALTHY AMOUNT OF SALT HIDDEN IN OUR DIETS

The Great Salt Shakedown airs Friday, March 8 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC-TV’s MARKETPLACE

Are Canadians consuming too much salt, and do we even know where to look for it? In The Great Salt Shakedown on MARKETPLACE, Tom Harrington reveals the shocking amount of salt hidden in our diets, and investigates why our government doesn’t regulate how much sodium the food industry can put in our food. Too much salt can cause some serious health problems, and most of us don’t have a clue…

The Great Salt Shakedown airs on CBC News’ MARKETPLACE, Friday, March 8 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC-TV.

Eighty Canadians, 80 containers, and one of MARKETPLACE‘s most unusual tests ever… How much salt is in our urine, and what does that say about our food? In The Great Salt Shakedown, MARKETPLACE turns two sports teams and a high school class into guinea pigs, and reveals the surprising results from supposedly health-conscious Canadians.

About 14,000 deaths per year are caused by too much sodium, and they are completely preventable. Fat, protein, carbohydrates and calories register with most of us when thinking about our diets, but salt is barely on our radars. Only 6 per cent of our sodium intake comes from the salt shaker, and the rest is hidden in our food. We have to know where to find it in the first place, and the government seems willing to let the food industry off the hook.

Visit cbc.ca/marketplace to play the Great Salt Shakedown, an interactive game that has you build a day’s worth of meals to see how much sodium you are consuming.

MARKETPLACE airs Fridays at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC Television. MARKETPLACE also airs Saturdays at 9:30 p.m. ET and Sundays at 5:30 p.m. ET on CBC News Network.
