This award-winning feature length documentary tells the story of two Inuit communities of the circumpolar north—one on Canada’s Baffin Island, the other in Northwest Greenland—that are linked by a migration led by an intrepid shaman. Navarana, an Inughuit elder and descendant of the shaman, draws inspiration and hope from the ties that still bind the two communities to face the consequences of rapid social and environmental change.

In South Africa between Durban and Jeffreys Bay lies approximately 1000 kilometres of untamed topographical and oceanic paradise and in the middle is the Wild Coast. For local surfers Lungani Memani, Andrew Lange and Avuyile Ndamase, it’s their home. Every year in June the ocean swells to its peak, boasting the country’s largest surf conditions. It also becomes host to the sardine run, bringing together a huge diversity of marine life including many species of sharks.
This documentary goes up close with pro surfers Lungani, Andrew, and Avuyile and their family’s traditions and tribulations, alongside a hand-selected group of the best shark experts from the region, to uncover the real secrets and stories that surround the shark stigma that exists in South Africa.
Friday, March 15, 10 PM ET (Hot Docs Friday Night)
A MATTER OF TASTE is an intimate look inside the world of an immensely talented and driven young chef, Paul Liebrandt. At 24, he was awarded three stars by the New York Times for unforgettable and hyper-modern dishes such as “eel, violets and chocolate,” “espuma of calf brains and foie gras,” and “beer and truffle soup.” Critic William Grimes likened Paul to “a pianist who seems to have found a couple of dozen extra keys.” Conversely, Gourmet critic Jonathan Gold called Paul’s food “the result of a failed science experiment.” He soon became a chef critics loved, or loved to hate.
Sunday, March 24, 8 PM ET & 10 PM PT
This award-winning film premieres on documentary this month. Against a backdrop of war and poverty, OUT OF THE ASHES traces the extraordinary journey of a team of young Afghan men as they chase a seemingly impossible dream, shedding new light on a nation beyond burqas, bombs, drugs and devastation. This feature-length documentary follows the Afghan cricket team in their quest against the odds to qualify for the World Cup. Backed by BBC Storyville and executive produced by Oscar-winning director and cricket enthusiast Sam Mendes, OUT OF THE ASHES follows the squad over two years as they go from playing in their shalwar-kameezes on rubble pitches to batting their way around the globe and up the international league tables. At a time when headlines from Afghanistan are dominated by news of death and corruption, the film reveals a more human side to this beleaguered country which has endured three decades of war and occupation.
