2013 Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature, The Invisible War, gets its North American broadcast premiere on CBC News Network’s THE PASSIONATE EYE, on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
The Sundance Film Festival winner is a groundbreaking investigative documentary about one of America’s most shameful and best kept secrets: the epidemic of rape and sexual assault within the U.S. military.
Focusing on powerful interviews with the rape survivors themselves, The Invisible War is a moving indictment of the systemic cover-up of military sex crimes, chronicling the women’s struggles to rebuild their lives and fight for justice. Kori Cioca was beaten and raped by her supervisor in the U.S. Coast Guard; Ariana Klay served in Iraq before she was raped by a senior officer and his friend, then threatened with death; and Trina McDonald was drugged and raped repeatedly by military policemen on her remote Naval station in Alaska.
The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem. Today, a female solider in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The U.S. Department of Defense estimates there were a staggering 22,800 violent sex crimes in the military in 2011.
Since it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year, The Invisible War has inspired change. Already in 2013, a new bill has been passed in the U.S. that includes a range of measures specifically aimed at ending rape in the military and improving survivors’ access to care.
