Stuck With a Bad Car Right Off the Dealership Lot? CBC'S Marketplace Investigates Lemons, and Looks for a Fix to our Broken System

GETTING SQUEEZED airs on CBC News’ MARKETPLACE Friday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC-TV

It’s a gamble buying a new car, because there’s always a chance you’ll get stuck with a lemon. Thousands of Canadians are spinning their wheels dealing with lemon cars which have ongoing issues that just can’t be fixed.  No one is giving them a straight answer.  If you end up with a lemon, there’s little you can do about it, as there are no lemon laws for new cars. In this week’s episode of MARKETPLACE, we investigate lemons in Canada, and reveal how American laws are actually helping car owners on that side of the border.

In Getting Squeezed, we reveal how car owners are given the gears by dealers, carmakers, and government since there is no lemon law to protect them. No one knows for sure how many lemons are out there, but one expert estimates that up to 1 in 10 cars that roll out of dealership lots are lemons. Are you Getting Squeezed?

MARKETPLACE co-host Erica Johnson tracks down one Canadian family whose new car is so dangerous, they’re afraid to drive it. Their dealership and car maker aren’t offering a fix, so they’re stuck. We then head to California, and see how the state lemon law squeezes the car makers, and protects consumers. Isn’t it high time our provinces adopt similar laws?

Getting Squeezed airs Friday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC-TV; Oct. 6 at 9:30 p.m. ET and Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m. ET on CBC News Network.

Phil Edmonston, author of the Lemon Aid guides, is featured in Getting Squeezed, and is doing a live webchat where he’ll answer questions about lemons—and other car-related issues—on Friday at 1 p.m. ET at cbcnews.ca/marketplacechat. Also be sure to check out THE MARKETPLACE HOUSE at cbc.ca/marketplacehouse, where users can browse an interactive house and car, and get useful consumer information to help protect themselves from misleading products and repair rip-offs.

Winner of the 2011 Gemini Award for Best News Information Series, MARKETPLACE airs Fridays at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC Television.
