Paul Anka plays the hero, giving the final four another week on Cover Me Canada

CBC’s new live weekly musical competition series, COVER ME CANADA, paid tribute to Canada’s superstar crooner, Paul Anka. Anka held court, taking a seat as a guest judge alongside Deborah Cox, Ron Fair and Jordan Knight. This week’s song list was 100% Paul Anka. The singer/composer was as much a mentor as a critic to the final four bands performing his beloved classics. Warren Dean Flandez took on his 1959 hit, Diana, Ali Milner crafted Put Your Head On My Shoulder, Melanie Morgan made Puppy Love her own and Whosarmy owned Anka’s Lonely Boy,  with their rocked up version of the song from the film Girls Town. The entire cast kicked off the show with their collective take on She’s A Lady, a song Anka wrote for ‘70s singing sensation Tom Jones.

The conclusion of the show took an unexpected turn when guest judge, Paul Anka,  asked that the four bands be safe from elimination. This means all four bands will be back again next week to compete. For a photo of the judges with Paul Anka click here.

“Canada has always been home for me and the place where these songs were born,” commented Anka.“It has been an honour to have them interpreted by my fellow musicians on Cover Me Canada.”

A guest of honour at this week’s show was former member of Oasis, and current lead singer of Beady Eye, Liam Gallagher.

Making it a true family outing, Natalie Appleton, Nicole’s sister and fellow member of All Saints, also made the trip over from England to show her support and speak with her sister on air. For a photo of Nicole and Natalie click here.

“It’s great to be back in Canada, sharing this night with Nicole and everyone here in the studio and watching at home,” said Natalie after the show. “Cover Me Canada is a wonderful way to showcase this country’s emerging talent.”

Fans of COVER ME CANADA won’t want to miss George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight this Tuesday, as George will sit down with Nicole Appleton and Liam Gallagher for a world exclusive interview. This ‘red chair exclusive’ marks the first time ever that Liam and Nicole will sit down for a joint interview. Don’t miss it -  Tuesday, October 25 at 11:05 p.m. (11:35 NT).

COVER ME CANADA is broadcast on Sundays at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) on CBC. Host Nicole Appleton (All Saints) and judges Jordan Knight (New Kids On The Block), chart-topping R&B sensation Deborah Cox and star-maker manager and record executive Ron Fair (Christina Aguilera, Black Eyed Peas, Pussycat Dolls),  along with mentor-producers including Hawksley Workman, Kuya, and Gavin Brown,  preside as the finalists perform live in a bid to win the hearts of the nation and the opportunity of a lifetime: a $100,000 cash prize and a recording contract for an original single to be released by Universal Music Canada.
