CBC GARNERS AN AMAZING 151 GEMINI NOMINATIONS

CBC has received 151 Gemini nominations for programs aired on CBC Television, CBC News Network and Documentary over the past year—topping last year’s already impressive count of 142 nominations.

“This is thrilling news,” said Kirstine Stewart, interim executive vice-president of English services and general manager of CBC Television. “This is a testament to the tremendous high quality of our programming, our producing partners and our employees. And it’s a huge boost as we head into our new fall season.”

CBC received nominations for regionally produced and broadcast television programs throughout the country, and for programs in virtually every genre. Highlights includeThe Summit(9 nominations);Guns(9);The National(9);Love, Hate and Propaganda(8);the fifth estate(7);Keep Your Head Up, Kid(7);Being Erica(6);The Tudors(6);Republic of Doyle(5).

In addition, CBC swept five categories—guaranteeing wins in best local newscast, small market; best host or interviewer in a news info program or series; best news anchor; best performance by an actress in a featured supporting role in a dramatic program or mini-series; and best news information series.

“CBC news programs have done exceptionally well—The National and the fifth are still leading the pack, and our success in the local news categories is nothing short of outstanding,” said Jennifer McGuire, general manager and editor-in-chief, CBC news. “This recognition of ourpeople and our strength in breaking news is a great tribute to all our news teams across the country.”

“These nominations show once again that CBC brings audiences the finest Canadian programming and content on every platform,” added Stewart. “Congratulations to everyone involved in these programs on this remarkable showing.”

The presentation of the Gemini awards and special awards will beheld inTorontoover three nights in November. The Industry Gala Presentations will take place onTuesday November 2andWednesday November 3at the Kool Haus Entertainment Complex; the Broadcast Gala will take place onSaturday November 13at the historicWinter GardenTheatre.

Plus, in celebration of the 25thanniversary of the Geminis, Canadians can take a nostalgic look back at the greatest homegrown programs from the last 25 years and vote for their favourite online.

BeginningWednesday September 15, TV lovers can make their selection from a list of programs housed on a new, interactive website:www.favetvshow.ca. Compiled by a group of seasoned television critics, these 25 shows were shortlisted from all series broadcast during 1985-2010 inclusive. Viewers can either vote online, tweet their favourite show on Twitter, or comment via Facebook.

Canadians can have their say untilFriday October 29when the votes will be tallied for the gala broadcast. Special guests will present the countdown of Canada’s favourite TV shows throughout the awards ceremony onSaturday November 13.
