CBC SPORTS IS CANADA'S HOME FOR THE 2016 IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE TRACK AND FIELD SEASON

CBC Sports partners with beIN SPORTS to provide TV and digital streaming broadcasts of all 14 IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE meets across the 2016 season

CBC Sports today announced it has acquired multiplatform broadcast rights to the 2016 IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE season in a partnership deal   with global sports network beIN SPORTS, who will also be broadcasting the meets. The 2016 season includes a   total of 14 invitational meets taking place across Asia, Europe, North America and Africa over the course of the five-month-long season.

“We are very much looking forward to providing these world-class events to our audiences across Canada via our TV and digital platforms leading up to and following the Rio 2016 Olympic Games,” said Greg Stremlaw, executive director, CBC Sports, and general manager and chef de mission for CBC/Radio-Canada’s coverage of Rio 2016. “The Diamond League features 32 of the track and field disciplines contested at the Olympic Games, and with 10 of the 14 meets taking place prior to this summer’s Olympic Games our viewers will have the opportunity to watch these athletes compete head-to-head before they see many of them go for gold in Rio.”

CBC Sports will provide live streaming coverage of every 2016 IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE meet at cbcsports.ca and via the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices, while TV coverage will be featured as part of the network’s Road To The Olympic Games weekend broadcasts throughout the season.

The IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE is entering its seventh season featuring the world’s top track and field athletes competing for the Diamond Trophy and a total purse of US$8 million. The series includes 32 individual disciplines - divided equally between male and female competitions. Each discipline will be featured at seven of the 14 meets throughout the season. Athletes will compete to accumulate points towards their discipline’s season-long “Diamond Race” standings, with points being awarded to the top-6 finishers at each meet. Prize money will also be awarded to the top-8 finishers in each discipline, with a total prize purse of US$480,000 available at each Diamond League meet.

After competing at the final 2016 Diamond League meet in Zurich or Brussels (depending on the discipline), each of the 32 points leaders will claim a Diamond Trophy, a US$40,000 cash prize and the title of World No. 1 in their respective disciplines.

CBC Sports’ broadcast and live streaming schedules for the 2016 IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE season will be available online at   cbcsports.ca closer to start of each meet. In the meantime, Canadians can visit cbc.ca/olympics and follow @CBCOlympics for the latest news, analysis and results from the world of track and field.
