The World Cup stage, the first of the season, will be held Nov. 4-6
Short Track Speed Skating fans from coast to coast to coast in Canada will be able to see the top skaters in the world in action at the ISU World Cup, November 4-6 in Calgary. The official broadcast of the event will be available live on CBC as part of CBC Sports’ Road To The Olympic Games and will also be streamed live at cbcsports.ca, via the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices, and in French at ici.radio-canada.ca/sports.
Live streaming coverage of the finals will be available on Saturday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 6 beginning at 3 p.m. ET (12 p.m. PT) each day at cbcsports.ca and via the CBC Sports app.. Competitions will also be broadcast live on CBC on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. ET (2 p.m. PT). CBC Sports’ Scott Russell will host the TV broadcast and provide play-by-play commentary alongside analyst and three-time Olympic speed skating medallist Catriona Le May Doan. At this first World Cup of the 2016-2017 season, sports fans who love speed, excitement and risky overtaking will be able the follow the performances of Canadian Team members who will kick off their pre-Olympic season almost 450 days ahead of the opening ceremony of the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.
In Calgary, Canada will be represented by Olympic medalists Charles Hamelin, Marianne St-Gelais, Charle Cournoyer, Valérie Maltais, Marie-Ève Drolet and François Hamelin, as well as their teammates Samuel Girard, Kim Boutin, Kasandra Bradette, Jamie Macdonald, Pascal Dion and William Preudhomme.
CBC Sports is Canada’s official broadcaster for this season’s short and long track world championshipsthis season, namely the ISU World Short Track Championships, to be held March 10-12, as well as the World Single Distance Championships, February 9-12, the World Sprint Championships, to take place in Calgary on February 25-26, and the World Allround Championships, March 4-5.
In this pre-Olympic season, the Canadian skaters will aim to add to the success they had last year. In 2015-2016, the Short Track National Team won a total of 54 medals – nine at the World Senior Championships, one at the World Junior Championships and 44 in World Cups. Last year’s total (54), as well as the tally at the World Championships (9) were the greatest medal haul for the team since the 1999-2000 season. The World Cup total (44) was the best since 2001-2002.
