CBC today announced Catherine Reitman, Gordon Pinsent, Jus Reign, Ins Choi, Tanya Tagaq and Annie Murphy as the presenters for the 2016 SCOTIABANK GILLER PRIZE gala. These presenters will join the shortlisted authors onstage to celebrate the year’s biggest achievements in Canadian arts and letters.
The shortlist this year is:
- Mona Awad for her novel 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl, published by Penguin Canada
- Gary Barwin for his novel Yiddish for Pirates, published by Random House Canada
- Emma Donoghue for her novel The Wonder, published by HarperCollins Publishers Ltd
- Catherine Leroux for her novel The Party Wall, published by Biblioasis International Translation Series, translated by Lazer Lederhendler
- Madeleine Thien for her novel Do Not Say We Have Nothing, published by Alfred A. Knopf Canada
- Zoe Whittall for her novel The Best Kind of People, published by House of Anansi Press Inc.
The six authors on the shortlist were selected by an esteemed five-member jury panel made up Canadian writers Lawrence Hill (Jury Chair), Jeet Heer and Kathleen Winter, along with British author Samantha Harvey and Scottish writer Alan Warner. The special presenters will introduce the finalists and their books, as follows:
Mona Awad – presented by actor and writer Catherine Reitman, creator and star of CBC’s upcoming comedy Workin’ Moms
Gary Barwin – presented by award-winning actor Gordon Pinsent
Emma Donoghue – presented by comedian and YouTube star Jus Reign
Catherine Leroux – presented by actor and playwright Ins Choi, creator and director of CBC’s Kim’s Convenience
Madeleine Thien – presented by award-winning composer and recording artist Tanya Tagaq
Zoe Whittall – presented by actor Annie Murphy, star of CBC’s Schitt’s Creek.
The 2016 SCOTIABANK GILLER PRIZE gala, hosted by comedian Steve Patterson (CBC Radio One’s The Debaters) and featuring live music from R&B singer Jully Black, will be broadcast from The Ritz-Carlton in downtown Torontoon CBC and live-streamed at CBCBooks.ca on Monday, November 7 at 9 p.m. (10 AT/10:30 NT), culminating with the announcement of this year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize winner.

The Scotiabank Giller Prize strives to highlight the very best in Canadian fiction year after year.
