CBC TAKES HOME 18 WINS AT THE 2017 CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS OPENING NIGHT GALA

CBC’S hit series STILL STANDING honoured with three awards including Best Factual Series

CBC and its production partners took home 18 awards, more than any other broadcaster, at the March 7 opening gala for The Academy of Canadian Film & Television’s Canadian Screen Awards honouring excellence in non-fiction television programming including documentary, reality, lifestyle, news and sports content.

CBC News was honoured with six awards including five for THE NATIONAL for Best National Newscast, Best News or Information Segment, Best National Reportage, Best Photography in a News or Information Program and Best Host or Interviewer in a News or Information Program or Series for Wendy Mesley. CBC NEWS: HERE & NOW (Newfoundland and Labrador) was honoured with Best Local Newscast.

CBC Sports was awarded Best Live Sports Event for the RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES, the most-watched summer Olympic Games in Canadian history. 

Last summer’s historic, nation-building live event on CBC - THE TRAGICALLY HIP: A NATIONAL CELEBRATION - was recognized with two awards for Best Live Entertainment Special and Best Production Design or Art Direction in a Non-Fiction Program or Series.

CBC’s hit factual series STILL STANDING took home three awards for Best Factual Program or Series, Best Writing in a Factual Program or Series and Best Host in a Lifestyle, Talk or Entertainment News Program or Series for Jonny Harris.

CBC’s acclaimed documentary programming was recognized with three awards for FIRSTHAND including Best Direction in a Documentary Program for GUANTANAMO’S CHILD: OMAR KHADR and Best Writing in a Documentary Program or Series for THE WOMAN WHO JOINED THE TALIBAN; and two awards for THE NATURE OF THINGS including Best Science or Nature Documentary Program or Series for MOOSE: A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF A TWIG EATER.

The 2017 Canadian Screen Awards, hosted by comedian Howie Mandel, will be broadcast live on CBC on Sunday, March 12 at 8 p.m. (9 AT/9:30 NT). Leading up to the broadcast, Canadians can share their thoughts on the nominees with CBC on Twitter @CBC using #CdnScreenAwards.
