Live streaming coverage at cbc.ca/naig kicks off with the Opening Ceremony Sunday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. PT)
CBC’s coverage of the TORONTO 2017 NORTH AMERICAN INDIGENOUS GAMES (NAIG 2017) begins this Sunday, July 16 with the Opening Ceremony at Toronto’s Aviva Centre, which CBC will live stream at cbc.ca/naig beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. PT). Hosted by Duncan McCue of CBC Radio’s CROSS COUNTRY CHECKUP, the spectacular event will be a celebration of sport and culture featuring Indigenous musical performances and choreography from world-renowned Indigenous artist Santee Smith as well as a parade of nations including more than 5,000 athletes from across North America.
In addition to live streaming coverage of the Opening Ceremony, CBC Toronto will hold a free live viewing event for members of the public on Sunday evening in the Barbara Frum Atrium at 250 Front St. West. Doors will open at 7 p.m. ET with general seating available as well as family-friendly activities including a colouring area for kids.
As Premier Media Partner of the TORONTO 2017 NORTH AMERICAN INDIGENOUS GAMES, CBC will offer more access to the Games than ever before through an unprecedented level of coverage across multiple platforms and programming areas. CBC will deliver a wide range of content throughout the eight-day event at cbc.ca/naig from CBC News’ Indigenous Unit, CBC Sports, CBC Radio, CBC Arts and CBC Kids, including original journalism, documentary storytelling and news coverage; special video and audio programming including sports features; and social media content. The cbc.ca/naig site will also serve as the primary home for CBC’s live and on-demand streaming competition coverage, schedules and a live blog that will provide up-to-the-minute news and notes from CBC teams in the field at NAIG 2017 sporting events and cultural activities taking place each day.
During NAIG 2017, more than 5,000 Indigenous young people aged 13–19 are expected to participate in teams representing all 13 provinces and territories in Canada and up to 13 regions in the U.S.
About the Toronto 2017 North American Indigenous Games
From July 16-23, 2017, the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) will welcome more than 5,000 participants, 2,000 volunteers and countless spectators from across North America. Sport and cultural venues include City of Toronto facilities, Humber College, McMaster University, York University, University of Toronto Scarborough, City of Hamilton venues, and venues within Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. A total of 14 sports will be offered for competition during the event, in addition to week-long cultural festivals, featuring programming such as traditional teachings, Indigenous artists, vendors and cultural performers.
