CBC SPORTS TO OFFER COMPLETE COVERAGE OF THE LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL® CANADA REGION TOURNAMENT, AUGUST 3–12

Round-robin games will stream live at cbcsports.ca and via the CBC Sports app with the semifinal and final games to be broadcast on CBC

Tournament-winning team will represent Canada at the 2017 Little League Baseball® World Series in Williamsport, PA

CBC Sports will have live coverage of every game from the LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL® CANADA REGION TOURNAMENT as teams from across the country meet in Medicine Hat, Alberta from August 3–12 to compete for the national title and the right to represent Canada at this year’s Little League Baseball® World Series. CBC Sports will offer live-streaming coverage of each game from the seven-team tournament at cbcsports.ca and the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices, with the semifinal and final games to be broadcast on CBC.

Live-streaming coverage of round-robin games will feature play-by-play commentary from CBC Sports’ Matthew Cullen and sideline reports from Craig McMorris. Cullen will be joined in the booth by special guests throughout the tournament. Former Montreal Expos broadcaster Tom Valcke will join the broadcast team as an analyst for the semifinal and final games on CBC Television.

Seven teams will take part in the tournament, representing the British Columbia, Alberta, Prairies, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic regions, plus the host team from Medicine Hat. CBC Sports’ live-streaming coverage will include three round-robin games daily from Aug. 3–9, followed by the two semifinal games on Aug. 11 and the final on Aug. 12, also broadcast on CBC. After the tournament, cbcsports.ca will follow the winning team to the Little League Baseball® World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania to cover the team’s progress as it faces opponents from around the world.

CBC Sports will also offer live-streaming coverage of a Challenger Baseball game on Aug. 11. Challenger Baseball is a program that provides an opportunity for children with cognitive or physical limitations to enjoy the full benefits of participation in baseball at a level structured to their abilities.

In 1952, Canada became the first international team represented in the Little League Baseball® World Series and in 1958, the Canadian Region was officially created with a tournament established between representatives from Ontario and Quebec. Notable members of past Canadian Regional Tournament championship teams include Michael Saunders (Gordon Head Little League, Victoria, B.C.; 1999), Adam Loewen (Kennedy-Surrey Little League, Surrey, B.C.; 1996) and Jason Bay (Trail Little League, Trail, B.C.; 1990).

As announced earlier this year, Little League® International, Little League Canada and CBC Sports have entered into a four-year partnership that will give Canadian audiences access to full-game coverage of the LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL® CANADA REGION TOURNAMENT for the first time ever. With annual coverage of round-robin games, both semifinal games, and the championship final through 2020, CBC Sports will provide more coverage of the LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL® CANADA REGION TOURNAMENT than has ever been available before.
