CBC LEADS WITH FOUR OF THE TOP FIVE MOST NOMINATED SERIES INCLUDING ANNE, KIM’S CONVENIENCE, ALIAS GRACE AND SCHITT’S CREEK
CBC NEWS RECEIVES 30 NOMINATIONS IN 16 NETWORK AND LOCAL CATEGORIES
January 17, 2018 – CBC has received 210 nominations from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television for the 2018 Canadian Screen Awards in recognition of the national public broadcaster’s programming, production partners and creative talent. Exceeding last year’s previous record of 193, the nominations span 80% of all television, digital and film categories, underscoring CBC’s commitment to distinct, high quality Canadian storytelling across all genres and platforms.
As previously announced, the Academy is also honouring former CBC News chief correspondent and The National anchor Peter Mansbridge with a Lifetime Achievement Award, for his exceptional lifetime of work, and satirical sketch comedy series RICK MERCER REPORT with an Academy Icon Award, for its ongoing contribution to the media industry in Canada and globally.
The 2018 Canadian Screen Awards will be broadcast live on CBC on Sunday, March 11 at 8 p.m. (9 p.m. AT and 9:30 p.m. NT). Leading up to the broadcast, Canadians can share their thoughts on the nominees with CBC on Twitter @CBC using #CdnScreenAwards.
Highlights of CBC’s Canadian Screen Award nominations include the following:
- CBC NEWS has received 30 nominations in 16 network and local categories including multiple nods for flagship news and investigative programs THE NATIONAL (8) and THE FIFTH ESTATE (8), as well as five nominations for CBC News Network and two nominations for MARKETPLACE. CBC Regions received six nominations in three categories for excellence in Vancouver, Manitoba, Toronto and Montreal.

CBC’s scripted programming has earned 89 nominations, with four of the top five most nominated series, including:
- Drama series and specials: ANNE (13), ALIAS GRACE (11), MURDOCH MYSTERIES: ONCE UPON A MURDOCH CHRISTMAS (4), PURE (3), X-COMPANY (3) and Gord Downie’s THE SECRET PATH (2).
- Comedy series: KIM’S CONVENIENCE (12), SCHITT’S CREEK (11), BARONESS VON SKETCH SHOW (6), WORKIN’ MOMS (5), RICK MERCER REPORT (5), THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES (4), MR. D (3) and MICHAEL: EVERY DAY (1).
- CBC Kids has garnered four nominations for DOTOPEDIA, JAXON AND SONG'S MAPLE MYSTERY, SMALL TALK and WANDERING WENDA.

CBC’s unscripted, arts and documentary programming has received 52 nominations including:
- Unscripted & Arts: Two nominations for THE GOODS including Best Lifestyle Series and Hosts, Best Biography or Arts Documentary Series nods for EXHIBITIONISTS, EXTRAORDINARY CANADIANS (2) and INTERRUPT THIS PROGRAM (3), two nominations for Jonny Harris’ STILL STANDING, a Best Factual Series nomination for TAKEN (2) and three nominations in the Best Live Entertainment Special category for the 2016 GILLER AWARDS, the 2017 CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS (2) and the Rick Mercer-hosted celebration CANADA 150! FROM COAST TO COAST TO COAST (3).
- Documentaries: Nine nominations for THE NATURE OF THINGS including three for THE WILD CANADIAN YEAR, six nods for CBC DOCS POV including THE GREAT WILD INDOORS, KOSHER LOVE, RUNNING ON EMPTY and SICKBOY and additional nominations in key categories for BABE, I HATE TO GO, CHEER UP and SLED DOGS.

CBC SPORTS has garnered eight nominations including a Best Sports Host nomination for Scott Russell, three for the 2017 WORLD TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS and two for CALGARY STAMPEDE CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY.
- CBC’s original digital comedy series received three nominations each for THE NEDDEAUS OF DUQESNE ISLAND and TERRIFIC WOMEN, as well as nods for RAKHEE MORZARIA’S NOTE TO SELF and SAVE ME.
- CBC-supported Canadian feature films received 19 nominations including MAUDIE (7), THE BREADWINNER (6), THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS (3), BON COP BAD COP 2 (2) and a nomination for Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Tzi Ma of MEDITATION PARK, one of the first recipients of the CBC Breaking Barriers Film Fund.
