Reinforcing its year-round commitment to high-performance sport and Canadian athletes, CBC Sports has entered into a sub-licensing agreement with DAZN Canada to provide Canadian broadcast coverage of the upcoming XXI Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast, April 4-15. CBC will have live coverage of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and highlights of key events and performances by Canada’s athletes and para-athletes, from Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville. DAZN Canada will stream more than 400 hours of live event coverage and competitions from the Gold Coast exclusively on its platform. The Commonwealth Games is a key stop on the road to Tokyo 2020, as veteran Olympians strive to maintain their top rankings while new faces aim to capture attention and gain valuable experience in an international competition setting.
The XXI Commonwealth Games will welcome more than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 Commonwealth nations and territories, and will feature the largest integrated sports program in Commonwealth Games history, comprising 18 sports and seven para-sports. New for these Games are the additions of beach volleyball, para triathlon and women’s rugby sevens as well as the return of basketball.
The Opening Ceremony will air live on Wednesday, April 4 beginning at 6 a.m. ET (3 a.m. PT) on CBC, hosted by Scott Russell and 19-time Paralympic medallist Stephanie Dixon. CBC Sports broadcast staple Road to the Olympic Games will cover events each weekend throughout the Commonwealth Games, including athletics, swimming and diving, as well as reporting on Canada’s medal moments, with hosts Russell and Dixon, and reporter Anson Henry on location (Sat. April 7 at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT, Sat. April 14 at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT, and Sun. April 15 at 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT – all times subject to change). The competition wraps up on Sunday, April 15 with live coverage of the Closing Ceremony on CBC beginning at 6:30 a.m. ET/3:30 a.m. PT. All CBC broadcasts will be simultaneously live-streamed at cbcsports.ca and via the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android, where fans can also access the latest competition news and results.
Commonwealth Games Canada will send 283 athletes to the Games, including 10 Olympic Games medallists and four Paralympic Games medallists from Rio 2016. Canada is projected to win more than 100 medals and place in the top-three countries in the final medal count. Canadian athletes to watch include: swimmers Kylie Masse (a bronze medallist at Rio 2016), Penny Oleksiak (record-setting four-time medallist at Rio 2016), Aurélie Rivard (a five-time Paralympic medallist, including three golds at Rio 2016) and Taylor Ruck (two-time bronze medallist at Rio 2016); divers Meaghan Benfeito (a three-time Olympic Games bronze medallist and also Canada's Opening Ceremony flag bearer for the 2018 Commonwealth Games) and Olympic bronze medallist Jennifer Abel; Rio 2016 bronze medallist Damian Warner, who is returning to defend his Commonwealth title from Glasgow 2014; and the women’s rugby sevens team with captain Ghislaine Landry, who led Canada's team to a bronze medal at Rio 2016 following a gold at the 2015 Pan Am Games.
