Track and field events will stream live at cbcsports.ca and via the CBC Sports app, with live weekend broadcast coverage on CBC
CBC Sports will have exclusive Canadian coverage of the 2018 NORTH AMERICAN, CENTRAL AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN (NACAC) CHAMPIONSHIPS in Toronto from August 10–12, featuring the top track and field athletes from the region. Live weekend broadcast coverage of the championships, also known as Track & Field in the 6ix, will be available on CBC as part of ROAD TO THE OLYMPIC GAMES, as well as daily live-streaming of all events at cbcsports.ca and on the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices. Live TV coverage on CBC begins Saturday, Aug. 11 at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT) and at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PT) on Sunday, Aug. 12.
CBC Sports’ Scott Russell will host the live weekend CBC broadcast coverage from on location at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium, as part of weekly staple ROAD TO THE OLYMPIC GAMES, with Olympian and World Championship sprinter Anson Henry hosting the event for the stadium crowd while also contributing behind-the-scenes social coverage for @CBCOlympics. Gemini Award-winning commentator Mark Lee will provide play-by-play, with Olympian and World Champion hurdler Perdita Felicien and Olympian and two-time Commonwealth Games decathlon champion Michael Smith contributing as analysts. Felicien will also provide reports from track level.
Canada will be well-represented at the 2018 NACAC CHAMPIONSHIPS with a team of 52 athletes, 28 men and 24 women, including a mix of veterans and newcomers. Key names include: gold medallist at the 2015 Pan American Games and 2015 World Champion in men’s pole vault, Shawn Barber; bronze medallist at Rio 2016 and double-gold medallist at the recent 2018 Canadian Track & Field Championships, Aaron Brown, competing in the men’s 200m and 4x100m; three-time national champion in the 200m, Crystal Emmanuel, competing in the women’s 100m, 200m, and 4x100m; Olympian Brandon McBride, who recently set a Canadian record in the men’s 800m at the Monaco Diamond League meet; and gold medallist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in women’s pole vault, Alysha Newman.
In addition to Canadian stars, athletes to watch include: two-time Olympic Games gold medallist in the 100m and seven-time World Champion, Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce; American Courtney Okolo – the gold medallist at the 2015 NACAC Championships in the 400m and 4x400m, with gold medals in the same events at the 2018 World Indoor Championships – in the women’s 400m; and American Sandi Morris, the gold medallist at the 2018 World Indoor Championships, in women’s pole vault.
CBC Sports’ coverage of the 2018 NACAC CHAMPIONSHIPS is part of a four-year media rights partnership with Athletics Canada to showcase Canada’s high performance athletes at key events in the track and field calendar. The last NACAC Championships were held in San José, Costa Rica, in 2015. The 2018 edition offers the winning athletes a total prize purse of $200,000 CDN and the opportunity to acquire qualification points for next year’s World Championships.
