CBC Sports will join the world’s best figure skaters in Saitama, Japan, this week for the 2019 ISU WORLD FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS, offering more than 50 hours of exclusive Canadian coverage across broadcast and streaming platforms. Viewers can follow all the action from Wednesday through Sunday with daily coverage from CBC Sports staple Road to the Olympic Games on CBC and the free CBC Gem streaming service, as well as live streams of every event available on cbcsports.ca, CBC Gem, and via the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android.
CBC Sports’ Road to the Olympic Games crew will be in Saitama throughout the competition, with host Scott Russell leading the broadcasts beginning Wednesday, March 20 at 4 p.m. local time across Canada. Andi Petrillo will provide play-by-play commentary, with Olympian and four-time World Champion Kurt Browning, renowned coach and choreographer Carol Lane, and Olympic silver medallist for pairs in the team event, Dylan Moscovitch, offering further analysis. Brenda Irving will be at the centre of the action, rink-side, to interview the key competitors, and Pj Kwong will augment coverage online and on social media with additional insight into the competition. Canada is sending a strong team made up of veteran and up-and-coming skaters to the competition, including two men, three women, two duos for pairs and three for ice dance. Olympic gold medallist in the team event and 2017 World bronze medallist, Gabrielle Daleman, will make her highly anticipated return to the women’s international competition after taking time off last year. Joining Daleman in the women’s event will be two-time Canadian champion Alaine Chartrand. In ice dance, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, the reigning Canadian National Champions, will look to maintain a spot on the podium after a third-place finish at last year’s World Championships and a second-place finish at the 2019 ISU Four Continents Championships. Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier will no doubt provide a challenge, having finished just behind them in third place at Four Continents. Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro, who recently won silver at Four Continents, will be strong contenders in the pairs’ event, while Keegan Messing, who finished just off the podium at the 2018 Grand Prix Final, and Nam Nguyen, the reigning Canadian Champion, will represent in the men’s event.
On the international side, fans of the Japanese contingent will have much to cheer for as Yuzuru Hanyu, a two-time Olympic and World Champion, and Shoma Uno, Olympic and World silver medallist, will take to the rink for the men’s event. American Nathan Chen, the 2018 World champion and Olympic bronze medallist, will also compete. Russia's reigning Olympic champion Alina Zagitova and two-time Olympic silver medallist Evgenia Medvedeva will look to rule in the women’s event. In pairs, France’s Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres, and Russia’s Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, will be the duos to watch, following their podium finishes at last year’s World Championships. France's Olympic silver medallists and three-time World Champions in ice dance Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron will also look to continue their reign.
