- 2019 World Para Ice Hockey Championships is the latest event in the Paralympic Super Series, bringing live coverage of Para sport events to Canadians
Ottawa/Toronto, April 25, 2019 – The Canadian national Para ice hockey team will be on the hunt for its second consecutive world title beginning this weekend at the 2019 World Para Ice Hockey Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic, and the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) and CBC/Radio-Canada will be bringing live coverage of the tournament to viewers across the country from April 27 to May 4 as part of the Paralympic Super Series.
Canada’s games at the 2019 World Para Ice Hockey Championships will be available as live streams with English commentary via the free CBC Gem streaming service and the CPC Facebook page, and via the Radio-Canada Sports app and radio-canada.ca/sports. In addition, both the gold and bronze-medal games will be livestreamed. CBC Sports will also offer the streaming coverage at cbcsports.ca and via the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices.
“We are thrilled by the announcement to have our games streamed live back in Canada,” said forward Tyler McGregor, a two-time Paralympic medallist. “It’s an incredible opportunity to share and grow our sport with friends, family, fans and people watching for the first time. I grew up being able to watch my favourite hockey players on TV all the time and that played a pivotal role in inspiring me to become one. Hopefully this is a chance for us to provide that same level of inspiration for some young boys and girls out there playing Para ice hockey, who want to win a gold medal for Team Canada someday.”
Canada is the defending world champion, having taken home the title two years ago with a 4-1 win over USA in the final. The nation possesses a record four gold medals from the world championships. The squad is most recently coming off a silver-medal performance at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games, where they fell to USA in overtime.
Twelve athletes from last year’s Paralympic Games will be returning to the team while four players will be making their world championships debut. CLICK HERE for the complete Canadian roster set to compete in Ostrava.
In the preliminary round of the world championships, Canada will compete in Group A alongside USA, South Korea, and Norway. The top two finishers in the group will earn direct entry into the semifinals, with the bottom two moving into the quarter-finals.

Recently retired Paralympic swimmer Benoît Huot will be onsite in Ostrava to provide additional content to viewers in English and French, such as intermission interviews with the athletes and behind-the-scenes footage. As the Super Series reporter, his work will be available via the Canadian Paralympic Committee social media channels and during the live streams.
The Paralympic Super Series was launched earlier this year by the Canadian Paralympic Committee and CBC/Radio-Canada. A package of Paralympic sport competitions, the Super Series has so far offered live stream coverage of Para alpine skiing and Para nordic skiing, with more sports to be announced throughout the year.
