October 24, 2019 – CBC today announced Matt Galloway, host of CBC Toronto’s top-rated morning radio show Metro Morning, will become the new host of the acclaimed national CBC Radio’s THE CURRENT. Galloway will officially join THE CURRENT on Monday, January 6, 2020. Guest-host and award-winning journalist, Laura Lynch, will continue to anchor the show in the interim.

Galloway joined Metro Morning as host in March 2010, succeeding long-time anchor Andy Barrie. He now takes over as host of THE CURRENT after a thorough search that followed the departure of Anna Maria Tremonti in June 2019.

"Audiences across the country are about to discover what Toronto listeners have long appreciated," said Susan Marjetti, Executive Director of CBC Radio and Audio. “Matt has done an outstanding job on Metro Morning. And while it is hard to think of a Metro Morning without Matt, it is also important that our brightest and best get new opportunities. The Current is one of our flagship journalistic shows. Matt brings a range and breadth to his new role. Curious and smart, he asks the questions that need asking. And like his incredible predecessor, Anna Maria Tremonti, he is a great listener and that allows him to deepen the conversation. For those reasons and more we are thrilled he has accepted the job as the new host of The Current.”

CBC Toronto’s annual charity drive and broadcast, Sounds of the Season, on Friday December 6, will mark Galloway’s last morning in his role as host of Toronto’s top radio show. A new host of Metro Morning will be named following a search that will begin in the coming days.

“I’ve been getting out of bed at three o’clock in the morning to hop on my bike and greet Toronto listeners on the airwaves for the last decade,” said Galloway. “I’m looking forward to being part of the big stories in Canada today, and diving into the international topics that I’m always curious about.”

THE CURRENT and Metro Morning are available across Canada via the free CBC Listen app for  iOS and   Android devices, and online at  cbc.ca/listen.

Galloway has been with CBC Radio for more than 15 years. In addition to hosting Metro Morning, he has anchored CBC Radio's coverage of the Olympic Games on several occasions, including Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014, as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

In 2012, he received the Excellence in Community Service Award from the Intercultural Dialogue Institute for addressing issues confronting diverse communities, and in 2013, received the award for Diversity and Social Inclusion from the Tagore Anniversary Celebrations Committee of Toronto. In 2014, 2015, and 2016, Toronto Life magazine named him one of Toronto's 50 most influential people. In 2015, Matt received the African Canadian Achievement Award for Excellence in Media. In 2017, he received an honourary degree from York University, and in 2018 he was awarded a Harry Jerome Award for Media. Galloway runs and rides his bike daily, and is an avid home cook. He shares his latest podcast picks on CBC Radio One  Podcast Playlist.
