CBC CONSOLIDATES NEWS COVERAGE IN RESPONSE TO THE EVOLVING CORONAVIRUS CRISIS

CBC CONSOLIDATES NEWS COVERAGE
IN RESPONSE TO THE EVOLVING CORONAVIRUS CRISIS

March 18, 2020 - CBC is consolidating its news resources in response to COVID-19. Effective today, CBC News Network will evolve into a core live breaking news service that will integrate journalism and coverage from CBC News Network, The National and local CBC stations across the country. CBC News Network will continue to be available to all Canadians free of charge on television and will also stream live on CBC Gem, CBCNews.ca, CBC.ca and the CBC News app.

“As Canadians turn to us for the latest developments during these unprecedented times, we are temporarily pooling our resources into one core news offering to ensure the very best of our local and national journalism,” said Susan Marjetti, General Manager of News, Current Affairs & Local, CBC. “We are needed now more than ever, and will work together across the organization to serve Canadians night and day with the trusted news and critical information they need for the duration of the pandemic, while keeping our teams safe. Simply stated, extraordinary times require extraordinary measures.”

Starting today, CBC News Network will temporarily replace most local supper hour and late night newscasts on CBC and CBC Gem at 6 pm and 11 pm local time every day of the week. CBC’s local stations across the country will continue to serve their communities with robust local radio, digital and social news programming. CBC North will continue to produce and broadcast Northbeat from Yellowknife and Igalaaq from Iqaluit in Inuktitut. CBC News Network will stream and share information that impacts local communities, and frequently remind audiences where they can access extensive local news.  CBC local teams will feed into national programming.

To support these efforts, Power & Politics will be placed on temporary hiatus so the show’s Ottawa production team can be redeployed to CBC News Network.

CBC is Canada’s trusted source on the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Canadians can receive the latest news, tips on prevention and have their coronavirus questions answered by subscribing to updates at cbc.ca/coronavirusbrief.
