CBC LAUNCHES ‘ART UNCONTAINED,’
A RICH COLLECTION OF INNOVATIVE CONTENT OFFERING INSPIRATION FOR AUDIENCES AND SUPPORT TO THE CANADIAN ARTISTIC COMMUNITY
New original content includes PlayME: THE SHOW MUST GO ON, a new CBC Podcast featuring audio adaptations of Canadian plays cancelled by the pandemic; and COVID RESIDENCIES, a series of video diaries from artists sharing how isolation has affected their art
April 21, 2020 - CBC has launched ART UNCONTAINED, an innovative collection of arts and culture programming to connect and inspire audiences and support Canadian artists during these unprecedented times. With new content to be added throughout the spring and summer, ART UNCONTAINED includes original digital content and series, music, podcasts, artist resources, curated art recommendations and more from CBC Arts, CBC Books, CBC Music and CBC Podcasts. Also today, CBC/Radio-Canada and the Canada Council for the Arts announced the creation of Digital Originals, a new time-limited funding initiative to help artists, groups and arts organizations pivot their work to online audiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. This new fund and ART UNCONTAINED extend the public broadcaster’s commitment to champion Canadian culture, connect artists and audiences, and inspire groundbreaking cultural programming.

- COVID RESIDENCIES: A diverse selection of artists share intimate video diaries about how isolation has affected their art in this ongoing original digital series. Available to stream now with new videos added regularly.
- ART APART: Provocative, original short works from emerging Canadian theatre artists supported by the National Theatre School of Canada’s Art Apart assistance project. Launching weekly starting next week.
- SCENES FROM AN EXHIBITION: Offering exclusive virtual tours of Canada’s finest galleries and museums, brought to life with behind-the-scenes stories from top curators and directors. Launching later this month.
- Helpful RESOURCES for artists struggling after cancellations and postponements (updated regularly).
- WEEKLY LISTINGS featuring the best virtual performances, talks, art classes and more for audiences to explore art and culture from home.

Offering timely support to the theatre community, two new projects from the producers of PlayME, the podcast series that transforms Canadian plays into audio fiction:
- THE SHOW MUST GO ON (Premiered April 15, 7x30): This special series features audio adaptations of contemporary works from Canadian playwrights that were disrupted by COVID-19, providing much-needed support in these uncertain times. Now available on CBC Listen and everywhere podcasts are available.
- THE QUARANTINE CHRONICLES: Inspired by the creative constraints of a global pandemic, this podcast series will feature new, original short audio dramas from award-winning playwrights about people who have to stay put, stretching the limits of what can happen while living in lockdown. Launching in June on CBC Listen and everywhere podcasts are available.
- GREAT CANADIAN SINGALONG: CBC Music asked Canadians to vote, and Blue Rodeo’s ‘Lost Together’ was chosen as the best homegrown song to bring us together in these times. Audiences are now invited to submit their own video renditions until April 27 for a chance to be included in one spectacular singalong compilation launching May 12.
- INSIDE VOICES (Launched April 17): In collaboration with CBC Kids, this series of videos led by CBC Music’s professional singing coach guides Canadian kids to sing the Pan Am games theme song “Together We Are One” at home. Canadian families can then upload their own karaoke videos using the hashtags #CBCMusicclass and #cbckids. CBC Music and CBC Kids will showcase some of the videos.
- QUARANTUNES: Broadcasting throughout the day on CBC Radio One and CBC Music, these ongoing segments feature the music that Canadian artists are creating during this period of isolation.
- MUSIC LISTINGS of live-streamed performances from Canadian musicians in the COVID-19 era.
- CBC Music has also expanded its commitment to the Canadian music industry and homegrown artists by programming all-Canadian music all day long.

- TRANSMISSION (Launching April 24): An inspirational and uplifting series reflecting on time, place, identity, community and purpose in the era of COVID-19. Canadian writers share essays, short fiction and poems, telling the stories of these uncertain times.
