Former CBC journalist, host, and producer brings more than 13 years of experience to the new role with CBC Engagement and Inclusion
CBC has appointed veteran journalist Robert Doane to the newly created position of Indigenous Advisor. Based in Prince George, B.C., Doane began his new role yesterday and reports to Nick Davis, Director of Engagement and Inclusion.
“The Indigenous Advisor position, which supports ongoing and increased Indigenous representation and the amplification of Indigenous voices at CBC, is crucial to the organization’s overall strategy of building a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable workplace,” said Davis. “We’re fortunate to welcome someone as talented and driven as Robert back to CBC to help us develop and sustain an Indigenous strategy that will make CBC a more inclusive organization.”
“This position must be one that creates space for Indigenous employees of today and the future. The challenges facing Indigenous staff are many and I think it is imperative to ask ourselves what we can do to support those who are now here and those to come,” said Doane. “A key piece to this position is engagement, to learn from and celebrate those who are already here, and to engage with those communities and territories on which we conduct our day-to-day business. It will be my job to listen, learn and to develop a strategy to tackle the challenges we collectively face: from how we recruit, train and retain staff, to how we are portrayed in media, and how we can collectively educate to ensure we are all walking on the same path together.”
Doane began his career at CBC in 2006 and held roles including researcher, associate producer, reporter, host and producer. He is a graduate of CBC’s Developing Emerging Leaders program and is a founding co-chair of CBC’s All Nations Employee Resource Group.
During his initial time with CBC, Doane obtained an MBA with a Leadership specialization from Royal Roads University. He left the public broadcaster in 2018 to serve as Director of Communications at Carrier Sekani Family Services, a non-profit serving 11 Member Nations on the territory of the Lheidli T'enneh in Prince George, B.C.. Doane is Gitxsan, from the Fireweed Clan.
