CBC OFFERS FREE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY WORKSHOPS FOR PRODUCERS DURING NATIONAL WASTE REDUCTION WEEK, OCT. 19-21

The new session, Green Week, is part of the ongoing One Stop Business Workshop series presented by CBC, CAVCO and CMPA, helping to equip emerging creators with more tools to navigate the production industry

CBC today announced the next season in the ongoing One Stop Business Workshop series organized with the Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office (CAVCO), and the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA). In advance of the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 and coinciding with National Waste Reduction Week, the newest edition of the virtual information session series, running October 19-21, is titled Green Week and will focus on easily implemented sustainable practices to reduce the carbon footprint of productions. These free sessions are open to independent producers of all experience levels who are interested in learning more about sustainable production. Registration is now open here. The sessions will be accessible and will also be recorded (with closed captioning and ASL) and made available for any registrants unable to attend live.

“Committing to sustainable practices in film production is more important now than ever,” said Lisa Clarkson, Executive Director, Business & Rights and Content Optimization, CBC. “Through these latest sessions in our series with CAVCO and CMPA, we're trying to make it easy for everyone involved with film, TV and digital production to make their work and our industry more environmentally sustainable.”

The Green Week workshop will consist of three 60-90-minute virtual sessions, one per day beginning at 2 p.m. ET from October 19-21, offering tools to help industry members better understand basic terminology and learn about changes they can make to lessen the environmental impact of their work. The daily sessions will consist of moderated panel discussions about: the importance of sustainability and decoding “green” terminology being used in the industry; the use of carbon footprint calculators; and easily implemented changes that can make immediate and positive environmental impacts on productions. Panellists and moderators will include representatives from CBC, CMPA, Creative BC, Earth Angel, Green Spark Group, Mercury Films, Ontario Creates/Ontario Green Screen, Shaftesbury, Sinking Ship Entertainment and William F. White International Inc.

The One Stop Business Workshop series introduces emerging independent producers and content creators with a focus on those from traditionally underrepresented groups in the industry (including those who are Indigenous, Black, people of colour, people with disabilities, LGBTQ2+, and women) to topics related to the business and financing of film, TV and original digital content. Following their participation in these sessions, creators will have a high level understanding of some of the topics that producers and creators would encounter throughout the production lifecycle. Participants are also offered the opportunity to earn a Certificate of Completion by completing quizzes related to the sessions.

To date, the 25 existing information sessions offered through the One Stop Business Workshop series, featuring the involvement of 40 industry organizations from across Canada, have been viewed more than 24,000 times by more than 2000 industry professionals. More information about the One Stop Business Workshop series, including previous sessions, can be found here.

Earlier this year, CBC/Radio-Canada announced a five-year environmental sustainability strategy, Greening Our Story. The plan will see the public broadcaster take a leading role in advancing sustainable production practices in the country’s media industry with the objective of creating content in ways that actively eliminate waste and carbon emissions from production workflows.
