Montreal, Quebec resident Kunal Ranchod leaves the tent this week
Season five of CBC’s THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW kicked off this evening with returning hosts, Alan Shane Lewis and Ann Pornel, and judges Bruno Feldeisen and Kyla Kennaley, and ten of the country’s best amateur bakers entering the iconic tent for the first time to face Cake Week.
During week one, the bakers were asked to create an individually designed Pound Cake for the Signature Bake; a chocolate-coated Australian treat, Lamingtons, for the Technical; and a dramatic Fault Line Cake for the Show Stopper. All 10 bakers whipped their best batter into shape, but ultimately the judges bid farewell to Kunal Ranchod from Montreal, Quebec, while the honour of being named the first Star Baker of the season went to Aurora, Ontario’s Steve Levitt.
As Ranchod leaves the tent, the following nine bakers remain:
- Aimee DeCruyenaere, 23, an industrial design student from Ottawa, ON
- Alina Fintineanu, 30, an orthodontic dental hygienist from Toronto, ON
- Amanda Muirhead, 45, a paralegal from Westmoreland, P.E.I.
- Caron Lau, 26, an occupational therapist from Richmond, B.C.
- Dougal Nolan, 31, a mental health researcher from Dartmouth, N.S.
- Marian Castelino, 41, a designer from Ottawa, ON
- Stephen Nhan, 30, a health administrator from Regina, SK
- Steve Levitt, 54, a small business owner from Aurora, ON
- Vincent Chan, 55, a graphic designer from Toronto, ON
In next week’s episode of THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW, the nine remaining bakers must know the way the cookie crumbles with Cookie Week, airing next Sunday, October 24 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC and the free CBC Gem streaming service.
