CBC/RADIO-CANADA CELEBRATES 52 WINS AT THE 2022 CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS

CBC/Radio-Canada and its production partners were recognized with 52 Canadian Screen Awards from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television over six days during Canadian Screen Week, including the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards show on CBC and CBC Gem, following 295 nominations earlier this year. Celebrating its tenth year, the Canadian Screen Awards honour excellence in scripted, unscripted, documentary, news and sports programming across television, film and digital.

Highlights include:

  • CBC’s original scripted programming won 16 awards: four wins for TALLBOYZ including Best Sketch Comedy Program or Series and Best Performance, Sketch Comedy (Individual or Ensemble); three wins for SORT OF including Best Comedy Series and Best Writing, Comedy; and three for KIM’S CONVENIENCE including a fourth win for Best Lead Actor, Comedy for Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Jean Yoon’s first-ever win for Best Lead Actress, Comedy, and a fifth Best Supporting Actor, Comedy win for Andrew Phung. Tamara Podemski won Best Guest Performance, Drama Series, for her role in CORONER, and WORKIN’ MOMS and PRETTY HARD CASES each won a single Canadian Screen Award. CBC Kids took home two awards, including Best Production, Interactive for CBC KIDS NEWS MINECRAFT BACK TO SCHOOL SPECIAL and Best Performance, Animation went to RuPaul for THE BRAVEST KNIGHT. CBC Gem original comedy THE COMMUNIST’S DAUGHTER won Best Supporting Performance, Web Program or Series for George Stroumboulopoulos. 
  • CBC News won seven awards overall, with two for THE NATIONAL including Best National Newscast and Best Photography, News or Information, and one each for THE FIFTH ESTATE (Best News or Information Program), CBC NEWS SPECIAL: INSTALLATION OF THE 30TH GOVERNOR GENERAL MARY SIMON (Best Live News Special) and HOW TO START A REVOLUTION (Best History Documentary Program or Series). CBC VANCOUVER NEWS AT 6 won two awards: Best News Anchor, Local for Anita Bathe and Best Local Reporter for Belle Puri. 
  • CBC Arts’ Amanda Parris received the Changemaker Award; retired CBC North journalist Rassi Nashalik received the Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism; and retired Hockey Night in Canada announcer Bob Cole received the Lifetime Achievement Award. 
  • There were 15 wins for Canadian films supported CBC Films and Radio-Canada: Danis Goulet’s debut feature NIGHT RAIDERS took home six awards including Best Original Screenplay for Goulet, and Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers; ALL MY PUNY SORROWS won two awards; DRUNKEN BIRDS | LES OISEAUX IVRES, LEARN TO SWIM, MARIA CHAPDELAINE and THE TIME THIEF | L’ARRACHEUSE DE TEMPS each won a Canadian Screen Award. WILDHOOD won Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Joshua Odjick. ANGAKUSAJAUJUQ: THE SHAMAN’S APPRENTICE was awarded Best Animated Short and GIRLS SHOULDN’T WALK ALONE AT NIGHT | LES FILLES NE MARCHENT PAS SEULES LA NUIT won Best Live Action Short Drama. 
     
  • CBC’s factual and arts programs received nine awards, including four for CBC Arts 21 BLACK FUTURES including Best Web Program or Series, Fiction; Best Direction, Web Program or Series; Best Lead Performance, Web Program or Series, for Lovell Adams-Gray and Best Writing, Web Program or Series for Amanda Parris, who also won Best Host, Talk Show or Entertainment News for CBC ARTS: EXHIBITIONISTS. ARCTIC VETS won two awards, for Best Writing, Factual and Best Picture Editing, Factual, while FARM CRIME won Best Web Program or Series, Non-Fiction and the JUNOS 2021 won Best Live Entertainment Special. 
  • CBC Docs received two awards for BEING BLACK IN HALIFAX (Best Direction, Documentary Series) and NIKE’S BIG BET: ALBERTO SALAZAR AND THE FINE LINE OF SPORT (Best Sports Program or Series), and THE NATURE OF THINGS won one for THE COVID CRUISE (Best Original Music, Non-Fiction). CBC Gem title MY TREE, streaming beginning April 29, also won an award for Best Editing in a Feature Length Documentary. 
  • CBC Sports’ Andi Petrillo won Best Sports Host for OLYMPIC GAMES TOKYO 2020 ON CBC, her second win for CBC Sports.
