CBC News today announced the appointment of Steven D’Souza as a new co-host of CBC News’ award-winning investigative documentary program, THE FIFTH ESTATE. D’Souza joins veteran journalists and co-hosts, Bob McKeown, Gillian Findlay, and Mark Kelley to deliver compelling in-depth stories, and fast-reaction investigations of ongoing events.
“Steven’s mix of experience, enthusiasm for his stories, critical thinking and strong belief in the importance of investigative journalism at CBC makes him a perfect fit for The Fifth Estate,” said Diana Swain, Executive Producer, The Fifth Estate.
D’Souza is an accomplished reporter and foreign correspondent, well known to CBC audiences for his impressive range of work including live reporting from the U.S. protests around the death of George Floyd, coverage of two presidential elections, and investigative work that stretches back to his time as a local reporter in Toronto. Most recently he co-hosted CBC’s consumer investigative program MARKETPLACE.
“I’ve always challenged myself to tell stories with accuracy, fairness and nuance,” said D’Souza. “I can think of no better place to continue that challenge and take my work to the next level than at the pinnacle of CBC journalism. The Fifth Estate has set the benchmark for investigative journalism in Canada and I look forward to adding to that legacy.”
He began his CBC News career in 2000 as a reporter and video journalist based in PEI and Toronto. As a foreign correspondent based in New York City, D’Souza covered a range of events including Donald Trump’s years in the White House, the Papal conclave in Rome and the World Cup in Brazil.
In his role on CBC’s special coverage teams he has navigated live reporting from the G20 protests in Toronto, to the riots that followed the death of George Floyd, earning D’Souza and the team a Canadian Screen award. He also won recognition while working with CBC Toronto for a series of investigative stories on drug trafficking in the South Asian community.
The 48th season of THE FIFTH ESTATE will premiere this fall on Thursday, September 29.
