Annual fundraising event supports local food banks and connection in the community
On Friday, December 2, 2022, CBC British Columbia’s annual Food Bank Day returns with a full day of provincewide special programming on CBC Radio One and CBC Listen in support of Food Banks BC, the provincial association of food banks.
After raising over $2.9 million for local food banks in 2021, CBC British Columbia is honoured to bring back the community event, especially in a time when food bank demand is high. The public can donate online now and learn about the days’ programming at cbc.ca/foodbankday.
“As the public broadcaster, it’s important to us to support all communities across the province, especially after the past few years, as British Columbians are facing even more challenges,” says Johnny Michel, senior managing director, CBC British Columbia and Alberta. “There are many meaningful ways to support British Columbians, however, with inflation and rising food costs, people are struggling to make ends meet and we value the opportunity to give back to the communities we serve with this annual tradition.”
While touring the CBC Vancouver Broadcast Centre is a yearly highlight for many, this year the building will not be open to the public for tours. However, the centre is opening its doors to intimate, live studio audiences for live broadcasts of CBC Radio One programs. Registration to attend the live broadcasts is now open at cbc.ca/foodbankday and seating is limited.
“Putting together this day of exciting programming is such a meaningful endeavor for the many of us at CBC that work hard to make Food Bank Day happen,” says Anne Penman, the producer of CBC British Columbia’s Food Bank Day and recipient of the inaugural Food Banks BC Spirit of Giving Award. “It’s a very special day that marks the start of the holiday season and encourages the spirit of giving in the community.”
The schedule for CBC British Columbia’s Food Bank Day on December 2 includes:
Special broadcasts on CBC Radio One and CBC Listen: 5:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- The Early Edition with Stephen Quinn featuring special guests from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
- A special edition of On The Island with Gregor Craigie for Victoria listeners from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
- An extended and combined edition of BC Today with Michelle Eliot & North by Northwest with Sheryl MacKay from Noon to 3 p.m.
- On The Coast with Gloria Macarenko featuring unique stories and guests from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
This will be the 36th year that British Columbians have been generously donating to food banks at CBC/Radio-Canada's annual Open House and Food Bank Day, raising more than $15 million for food banks in B.C. since its humble inception in 1986.
