CBC/RADIO-CANADA CELEBRATES 66 WINS AT THE 2023 CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS

CBC original drama THE PORTER wins 12 awards, the most of any series this year including Best Drama Series, and CBC original comedy SORT OF dominates comedy categories with seven wins, including Best Comedy Series

CBC/Radio-Canada and its production partners were recognized with 66 Canadian Screen Awards from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television over four days during Canadian Screen Week 2023, following 320 nominations announced earlier this year. CBC original drama THE PORTER (Inferno Pictures and Sienna Films, a Sphere Media company), leading all nominations overall with 19 nods, was rewarded with 12 wins including Best Drama Series, and CBC original comedy SORT OF (Sphere Media), which dominated the comedy nominations with 15 nods, was recognized with seven wins including Best Comedy Series and Best Lead Performer, Comedy for co-creator and star Bilal Baig.

Canadian Screen Week culminates this Sunday with THE CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS WITH SAMANTHA BEE, an hour-long broadcast special featuring celebrity interviews, highlights from the Awards presentations throughout the week, and exclusive access to this year’s Special Award recipients. The winner of the 2023 Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award will also be announced during the broadcast special, with two CBC series in the top three: HEARTLAND and SON OF A CRITCH. The broadcast special will air on Sunday, April 16 at 8 p.m. (9 AT, 9:30 NT) on CBC and CBC Gem. Celebrating its 11th year, the Canadian Screen Awards honour excellence in scripted, unscripted, documentary, news and sports programming across television, film and digital.

Highlights include:

  • CBC’s original scripted programming won 29 awards: 12 awards for THE PORTER, the most of any series this year and including Best Drama Series; seven wins for SORT OF, including Best Comedy Series and Best Lead Performer, Comedy for Bilal Baig; three wins for TALLBOYZ, including their second consecutive win for Best Sketch Comedy Program or Series; two wins for PRETTY HARD CASES, and a Best Performance, Sketch Comedy (Individual or Ensemble) win for THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES. CBC Kids took home two awards for CBC Gem original DETENTION ADVENTURE, including Best Children's or Youth Fiction Program or Series, while CBC Gem original REVENGE OF THE BLACK BEST FRIEND took home Best Web Program or Series, Fiction, and Best Lead Performance, Web Program or Series for Oluniké Adeliyi. 
  • CBC News won six awards overall, including Best National Reporter for Junita Taylor of THE NATIONAL, Best News or Information Series for THE FIFTH ESTATE, Best News Anchor, Local for CBC VANCOUVER NEWS AT 6’s Anita Bathe, her second consecutive win in the category, and Best Local Reporter for CBC WINNIPEG NEWS AT 6’s Caroline Barghout. CBC News Network won two awards: Best Morning Show for CBC NEWS: MORNING LIVE WITH HEATHER HISCOX and Best Live News Special for CBC NEWS NETWORK: BREAKING NEWS SPECIAL — OTTAWA OCCUPATION
  • There were 19 wins for Canadian films supported by CBC/Radio-Canada: a record-setting 12 wins for Clement Virgo’s BROTHER including Best Motion Picture, Performance in a Leading Role for Lamar Johnson, Performance in a Supporting Role for Aaron Pierre, and Achievement in Direction and Adapted Screenplay for Virgo; two wins for CRIMES OF THE FUTURE; the John Dunning Best First Feature Film Award for FALCON LAKE; Best Animated Short for CBC acquisition THE FLYING SAILOR; Original Screenplay for RICEBOY SLEEPS; Achievement in Cinematography for VIKING; and the Golden Screen Award for Feature Film, honouring the Canadian film with the highest box office gross last year, for TWO DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS | 23 DÉCEMBRE.
     
  • CBC’s factual and arts programs received six awards, led by three awards for THE 2022 JUNO AWARDS including Best Live Entertainment Special, Best Host, Live Entertainment Special for Simu Liu, and Best Host, Talk Show or Entertainment News for Tom Power, for THE JUNOS PRE-SHOW WITH TOM POWER. BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE: STARWALKER won Best Performing Arts Program, and the late Martha Henry won Best Lead Performer, TV Movie for EDWARD ALBEE’S THREE TALL WOMEN. STILL STANDING won for Best Writing, Factual. 
  • Documentary programming won four awards: THE NATURE OF THINGS won the Rob Stewart Award for Best Science or Nature Documentary Program or Series for ICE AND FIRE: TRACKING CANADA’S CLIMATE CRISIS, and PASSIONATE EYE won the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political Documentary Program for THE PRETENDIANS. documentary Channel title THE COLOUR OF INK won Best Cinematography in a Feature Length Documentary and CBC Short Doc PATTY VS. PATTY won for Best Short Documentary. 
  • CBC Sports won Best Sports Program or Series, and Best Sports Host for Andi Petrillo, for the 2022 BEIJING WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES. This was the second consecutive win and third overall win for Petrillo with CBC Sports.
