On Saturday, July 1, the daytime CBC NEWS SPECIAL: CANADA DAY 2023 will broadcast live on CBC, CBC News Network, CBC Gem and CBC News Explore from LeBreton Flats Park in Ottawa, hosted by David Cochrane and showcasing Canada’s remarkable creative talent

Isabelle Racicot will host the evening special CANADA DAY: A PLAYLIST TO CELEBRATE from Ottawa featuring performances from across the country by Jann Arden, Roxane Bruneau, Jojo Mason, Madison Violet, Aysanabee, Preston Pablo, Tegan and Sara, Dear Rouge, and a special salute to Gordon Lightfoot

Isabelle Racicot hosts the evening special live from LeBreton Flats Park in Ottawa with appearances by Jann Arden, Les Louanges, Clerel, Roxane Bruneau, Jojo Mason, Madison Violet, Aysanabee, Dubmatique, Josh Q, France D'Amour, Dax, Josiane, Preston Pablo, Tegan and Sara, Dear Rouge and 6 Hearts. The special will journey from Canada’s Capital Region in Ontario to Charlottetown,  Calgary and Vancouver, and will feature a touching Gordon Lightfoot salute from various artists.

This program is a lighthearted celebration of the iconic Canadian goose. They are simultaneously an important food source for hunters, urban pests, beloved wildlife, and picnic ruiners. Host Jason D’Souza explores stories that reflect the country’s relationships with these antagonistic, but emblematic birds.

Host James Chaaran, takes a road trip to the most southern point of Canada, through farmlands and backwoods, trying to figure out whether a Lebanese-Canadian like him can belong in the more rural parts of the country. In this one-hour special, he’ll plunge deep into the culture of Canada’s “deep south,” as he dubs it, speaking to hunters, farmers and truckers, to figure out whether he fits in and to experience the culture of a part of the country he loves.

Host Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser brings you works by two Canadian composers. André Mathieu's Concerto No. 3 gets a stellar performance by Orchestre Metropolitain led by conductor Alain Trudel. Plus you'll hear Ann Southam's hypnotic and beautiful Glass Houses played by Canadian pianist Christina Petrowksa Quilico.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT THE OPERA WITH MARION NEWMAN

Two original Canadian operas from Quebec will be featured: Catherine Major's operatic version of Michel Tremblay's famous play Albertine en Cinq Temps, performed by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra led by conductor Jacques Lacombe. Then, a recital by the young Indigenous soprano Elisabeth St-Gelais, recorded especially for CBC Music this spring at McGill University.  Plus, Mary Morrison, the legendary 96-year-old Toronto voice teacher joins Marion to share stories and memorable performances by her students who have gone on to become some of Canada's biggest opera stars, including Tracy Dahl and Measha Brueggergosman.

SATURDAY NIGHT JAZZ WITH LAILA BIALI 

Saturday, July 1 at 8 p.m. local time (8:30 NT) on CBC Music and CBC Listen

Featuring Latin jazz from Luis Deniz and Jane Bunnett & Maqueque and ending with a few tunes sung en français by Sophie Day and Sonia Johnson. Then, the newest release from The Nimmons Tribute Band with the music of Oscar Peterson; a Short Bop from Daniel Barnes; Lauren Falls offers a New View; and you’ll hear The City Lights with Larnell Lewis. Also featured will be Kaytranada, Jesse Ryan, and The Ostara Project.

 

On July 1, CBC Music will also feature entirely Canadian music playlists on CBC MUSIC WEEKEND MORNINGS and C’EST FORMIDABLE.
