COMING UP ON CBC SPORTS: SUMMER 2023 PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS

An exciting lineup of high performance sporting events from Canada and around the globe are coming to CBC Sports this summer. The upcoming calendar includes: Volleyball Nations League, Diamond League, World Aquatics Championships, World Athletics Championships, Rugby Americas North Sevens, CBC Sports digital series Athletics North and Soccer North,and more. Streaming coverage will be available across CBC Sports digital platforms including the free CBC Gem streaming service, cbcsports.ca and the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices. In addition, select events will be featured on CBC TV as part of the CBC SPORTS PRESENTS weekend programming block. Highlights of the summer season are listed below. FIVB Volleyball Nations League 

Streaming now through July 23 

This summer, Volleyball Nations League takes centre stage, as the world’s best senior women’s and men’s national teams compete for the top prize. The Preliminary Phase features three competition weeks, with each of the 16 teams playing a total of 12 matches. The eight best-ranked national teams will qualify for the Finals, with the women's event being held in Arlington, Texas (July 12-16), and the men’s in Gdansk, Poland (July 19-23). This is a pivotal campaign for the Canadian women’s team that hopes to use the competition as a springboard to Paris 2024. All of Canada’s games will be streamed live across CBC Sports digital platforms with select coverage available on CBC TV. 

2023 Diamond League 

Streaming now through September 17 

Spanning four continents and fourteen countries, the Diamond League is athletics' premier one-day series, featuring the sport’s top athletes from around the world. The competition encompasses 15 of the sport's most prestigious one-day track and field meetings, with men and women competing in 16 of its primary disciplines. Athletes compete for points, with the most successful in each discipline qualifying for the Wanda Diamond League Final in Eugene, Oregon (Sept. 16-17). 

 

World Volleyball Beach Pro Tour Elite16 

Begins streaming July 5 

The Elite16 is the highest level of the Beach Pro tour, where the top 16 men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams in the world compete. The competition is held in four pools of four teams followed by a Round of 12, quarterfinals, semifinals and final matches to determine the gold, silver and bronze medal winners. Audiences can catch all the excitement live from Gstaad, Switzerland (July 5-9), Montréal, Quebec (July 26-30) and Hamburg, Germany (Aug. 16-20).

 

2023 World Para Athletics Championships 

Streaming July 817 

After a three-year hiatus, the World Para Athletics Championships return this summer, with the Canadian team motivated to make their mark on the Paralympic track and field. More than 1,330 athletes from 107 countries, including 25 from Canada, are expected on the track of Charléty stadium in Paris, France for 10 days of events. Athletes with disabilities and adapted sports will participate for the chance to win one of the 217 gold medals, and qualify for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

World Aquatics Championships

Streaming July 1430 

Hosted every two years, the World Aquatics Championships are second only to the Olympics Games in terms of prestige in the world of aquatic sports. Athletes compete across six different disciplines: swimming, diving, high diving, water polo, artistic swimming and open water swimming. This year’s event will be held in Fukuoka, Japan on the northern shores of Japan’s Kyushu Island.

 

Rugby Americas North Sevens Langford, B.C.

Streaming August 1920

Canada will have home-field advantage for this summer's Rugby Americas North Sevens, which takes place in Langford, B.C. and serves as the regional qualifier for the Olympic Games Paris 2024. With the USA Women’s team having already punched their ticket, Canada will face off against Bermuda, Jamaica, Mexico, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines in a six-team, round robin format with qualification for Paris 2024 and Sevens Challenger Series on the line. On the men’s side, Canada and USA will be joined by Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Mexico, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines to total nine teams competing. In the Men’s qualification event, the top-placed team will qualify for the Olympics and the second and third placed teams will go through to a final qualification tournament.

 

World Athletics Championships
Streaming August 1927
Taking place in Budapest, Hungary, the World Athletic Championships are the crown jewel of the World Athletics global competition program. It is the third largest sporting event in the world, consisting of more than 2000 athletes, from more than 200 countries, competing for 49 medals. The competition represents the highest level of international outdoor athletics including track & field, marathon running, and race walking.

Soccer North

Watch now across all CBC Sports Platforms

Hosted by Andi Petrillo, SOCCER NORTH is back, ahead of the Canadian women's soccer team's journey to the world stage in Australia and New Zealand. Soccer North covers the biggests storylines within Canadian soccer, on and off the pitch, featuring analysis and interviews with athletes, coaches and experts. The CBC Sports digital show will also be available on CBC TV.
