CBC News: Igalaaq Available on Inuit TV Beginning April 3

CBC News and Inuit TV today announced a new partnership to support both broadcasters’ commitment to preserving and promoting Inuit languages through programming. As part of the partnership, CBC News: Igalaaq will air on Inuit TV, starting Wednesday, April 3, 2024.

This agreement will provide Inuit TV with the rights to air CBC News: Igalaaq and will increase access and reach of CBC’s Inuktitut-language supper-hour news broadcast to new audiences.

CBC News: Igalaaq is CBC North's supper-hour daily Inuktitut news program, broadcasting live each weekday at 6:00 p.m. ET from Iqaluit, Nunavut and available on CBC Gem, cbc.ca/north, YouTube @CBCNorth and CBC TV. With this agreement, viewers will now be able to watch a rebroadcast of CBC News: Igalaaq on Inuit TV.

“I’m excited to see this partnership with Inuit TV come to fruition. This will bring Igalaaq into a few communities where CBC’s signal doesn’t currently reach,” said Eva Michael, host of CBC News: Igalaaq.

“Inuit TV is very pleased to work in partnership with CBC. Absolutely many talented and exceptionally knowledgeable Inuit have brought us here. Visionaries from almost two decades ago guided us to this point. Elders, youth, educators, language specialists and many Inuit who are passionate in keeping our language and culture to continue to strive and to always thrive. Countless volunteer board members throughout the years have been our foundation. Inuit TV plays an integral role in strengthening our Inuktut language and this agreement will help to reach our 80% Inuktut programming goal,” says Lucy Qavavauq, Co-CEO of Inuit TV.

CBC News: Igalaaq will air on Inuit TV the following day at 1:00 p.m. ET and repeat at 5:30 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday.

Inuit TV is a channel focusing on Inuit culture and language, launched in May 2022 and available on Shaw Direct Channel 268, Bell Satellite Channel 264, Arctic Co-Op Digital Cable Channel 241 and TELUS Optik TV Channel 113.

"CBC North is committed to providing Indigenous language programming across the North. This partnership with Inuit TV supports our vision to strengthen Indigenous languages like Inuktitut through our programming,” says Mervin Brass, Senior Managing Director of CBC North.

About Inuit TV

Inuit TV is officially the Government of Nunavut’s educational broadcaster. Our mandate is the promotion, preservation and enhancement of Inuktut while reflecting Inuit identity and culture. Our goal is to have 80% Inuktut programming that plays an important role in helping preserve cultural heritage. Launched on May 2nd, 2022 funded through a one-time grant from Nunavut Tunngavik Inc which helped the service get on air.

Following an industry conference in Iqaluit in 2006 Ajjiit Nunavut Media Association and Inuit Broadcasting Corporation entered into a partnership to explore the possibility of launching an Inuktut-language television service. With funding from the Government of Nunavut and Inuit organizations, over several years, this partnership undertook a feasibility study and audience survey and organized a stakeholders’ conference attended by Inuit across Nunavut.

On March 27th, 2014, the TV Nunavut Educational Broadcast Society (TVNEBS) was incorporated to address the lack of Inuktut programming on television by working to create a primarily Inuit-language, educational broadcast service providing television programming to Inuit.  TVNBES was replaced by Inuit TV when it was established as a Federal Not-for-profit corporation in March 2020.
