Tara McCarthy, New Host of CBC Radio's Edmonton AM

Long-time traffic, weather and community reporter for Edmonton AM, Tara McCarthy, is taking on the new role of host of CBC Radio’s Edmonton AM starting today, Friday, September 5.

Since joining Edmonton AM, McCarthy has been a key member of the show on the air and out in the community — regularly appearing at events on behalf of CBC Edmonton. She is no stranger to filling in on the host chair, during her six-and-a-half years with CBC Edmonton’s morning show.

“Taking on this role is honestly a dream come true,” McCarthy explains. “Ever since I stepped behind a microphone to host a radio show in university, I've known this is what I want to do for a living. Learning about Edmonton and meeting so many of the amazing people here has cemented how much I love this city, so I'm grateful and excited to be a part of sharing their stories on Edmonton AM.”

McCarthy joined the CBC Edmonton newsroom and the Edmonton AM team at the start of 2019 after she backfilled as host of the morning show the previous summer. Prior to coming to Edmonton, she spent a decade working at CBC Yukon in Whitehorse as a casual reporter, producer and host. From 2012 to 2019 she was also the managing editor for North of Ordinary Media, where she produced several magazines, and in 2015 she also did a stint as CBC's national pop culture columnist.

McCarthy got her start in news media as a host and reporter with Northern Native Broadcasting in Yukon. A graduate of Carleton University's journalism program, she has also served as a jury member for the Alberta Magazine Awards, the Western Canadian Music Awards and the Polaris Music Prize.

“Tara brings a genuine curiosity and passion to her work every day — she's always keen to learn more about the people in our community and the stories they have to tell,”  says Stephanie Coombs, director of journalism and programming for CBC Edmonton. “She has built a strong relationship with Edmonton AM listeners, helping them to wake up every morning and get up to speed on what's happening in the city and across northern Alberta. So I'm very pleased she will continue to be a part of our audience's morning routine, this time from the host's chair.”
