An average audience of more than 1.93 million Canadians watched the Opening Ceremony on CBC-TV and CBC News Network

The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games opened with a bang on Friday night with a Cirque du Soleil-produced extravaganza, and almost 5.5 million Canadians tuned in to at least one minute of CBC’s coverage of the show on CBC-TV. Overall, more than 10.6 million Canadians - or 30 per cent of the population - have watched at least some part of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Pan Am Games coverage so far.

A combined average audience of 1.93 million viewers (2+) watched Friday’s Opening Ceremony on CBC-TV and CBC News Network. The audience peaked at 2.338 million viewers at 9:07pm on CBC-TV as Team Canada made its way into the stadium during the parade of nations.

Once the games began, Canadians continued to flock to CBC for more coverage. Saturday’s Pan Am Prime show from 7-10 p.m. ET (4-7 p.m. PT) hosted by Scott Russell garnered an average audience of more than 1 million viewers (2+).

More highlights from the opening weekend of the Pan Am Games:

• New Canadians made up 20 per cent of the audience for CBC’s coverage of the Opening Ceremony

• Pan Am Afternoon with host Andi Petrillo on CBC-TV averaged 630,000 viewers (2+) across Saturday and Sunday’s broadcasts

• On the digital side, CBC’s Pan Am website (cbc.ca/panam) has generated nearly 4 million page views across the desktop and mobile versions and the CBC Sports App since July 10

• Over that same period, cbc.ca/panam has generated almost 1 million visits across the desktop, mobile, and app

• More than 465,000 video views have been generated through the desktop and mobile sites and the app

• Day 2 (Sunday, July 12) was the busiest day so far for cbc.ca/panam with nearly 1.8 million page views

CBC/Radio-Canada is the official broadcaster of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games in Canada and will provide Canadians with more hours of coverage than before - including unprecedented coverage of the Parapan Am Games - through an extensive multi-platform approach. CBC-TV’s coverage includes three daily weekday Pan Am broadcasts including afternoon, prime time, and late night shows, with additional programming on weekends. In addition, live streaming coverage is available throughout the day at cbc.ca/panam and via the CBC Sports App featuring Pan Am Games coverage, presented by CIBC (available for iOS and Android). The Pan Am Games continue through July 26, 2015, while the Parapan Am Games take place August 7-15, 2015 in Toronto and the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area.

CBC/Radio-Canada thanks its broadcast partners CIBC, Chevrolet, Atoma, Loblaws, OLG, Esso, Maytag, and Hotels.com for their ongoing support.

The Pan Am/Parapan Am Games is the world’s third-largest international multi-sport games and Toronto 2015 will be the largest multi-sport games ever held on Canadian soil. In keeping with the magnitude of the event, CBC/Radio-Canada will broadcast nearly 750 hours of coverage over the course of the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games across TV, online and mobile platforms. This year’s event marks the first time that the Parapan Am Games will be televised in English and French in Canada.
