SYRIAN REBELS UNMASKED ON CBC-TV'S DOC ZONE: WHO ARE THEY AND WHY DO THEY DO IT?

Syria: Behind Rebel Lines premieres on CBC-TV’s DOC ZONE Thursday, Feb. 21 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT)

Who are the Syrian rebels on the frontlines fighting for their country’s future, and why do they do it? How do they get their weapons and ammunition, communicate with each other in a country teetering on the edge, and what’s the toll been on their family and friends? Set against the backdrop of an impending major battle to clear out the last remaining loyalist outposts in a vast northern Syrian province, Syria: Behind Rebel Lines is the story of Syrian rebels fighting for their country’s independence from a tyrannical leader.

Syria: Behind Rebel Lines premieres on CBC-TV’s DOC ZONE Thursday, Feb. 21 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT).

If the rebels succeed in their battle, they will have created the first “liberated” province in Syria, a de-facto “safe zone,” without direct international help. In Syria: Behind Rebel Lines, we meet some of the men prepared to sacrifice their lives for their country. We spend time at their base, walk through the rubble of their homes, and talk about their families and fears of attack. What is it like to be in battle with rebels as they dodge a steady stream of artillery fire, and as government aircraft soar overhead, dropping bombs around them amongst their populated neighbourhoods? This is the story of Syria on the verge of collapse, told by those on the ground who have nothing left to lose.

Hosted by veteran Time Magazine correspondent Rania Abouzeid, and directed by Sylvène Gilchrist, Syria: Behind Rebel Lines is one of the most sober and penetrating pieces of journalism yet produced on the on-going Syrian civil war.
