One of Canada’s kings of comedy has been named the first host of the new
broadcast awards honouring the best in Canadian film, television, and digital entertainment.
Martin Short will host the inaugural presentation of the Canadian Screen Awards, which will be broadcast live on CBC-TV in March 2013.
“I applaud the fine judgment of the CBC and the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television in letting me take the wheel of the brightest new awards show in Canada,” said Short. “I shall endeavour to return it to them at the end of the night with nary a scratch nor door-ding.”
“We’re tremendously excited to have Martin hosting the first Canadian Screen Awards,” said Julie Bristow, Executive Director, Studio and Unscripted Programming, English Services, CBC. “Given his international success in both TV and feature films, he embodies what these new awards are all about -and you can bank on it being a night loaded with laughs.”
From SCTV and Saturday Night Live, through starring in his own television series and specials, to a film career including starring roles in Three Amigos and the Father of the Bride series, Short is one of Canada’s most successful film and TV comedians. The Hamilton, Ontario native has an extensive list of live theatre achievements as well, including a Tony Award for his performance in Broadway’s Little Me. Short is also a Member of the Order of Canada.
