CBC DELIVERS CANADA’S MOST-WATCHED PRIMETIME PROGRAM ON SUNDAY AS THE JUNO AWARDS RETURN TO THE NATIONAL PUBLIC BROADCASTER

CBC’s broadcast of the 2018 JUNO Awards garners an average audience of
1.4 million on CBC, CBC Radio and CBCMusic.ca with 33 percent of viewers in the 25-54 demographic, and an additional 230,000 streaming views to date in Canada and around the world

Showcasing some of the country’s best musical talent including artistic legends and rising stars, CBC’S March 25th broadcast of the 2018 JUNO Awards was Canada’s most-watched primetime television program on Sunday, as confirmed by preliminary overnight audience data from Numeris.* Hosted by 13-time JUNO Award winner Michael Bublé and featuring performances from Arcade Fire, Arkells, Daniel Caesar, Diana Krall, Jessie Reyez, Lights, Shawn Hook and The Jerry Cans, the two-hour broadcast delivered an average audience of 1.4 million across live and encore broadcasts on CBC television and live broadcasts on CBC Radio One, CBC Music and CBCMusic.ca, with 33 percent of the audience in the 25-54 demographic**. The television audience peaked with 1.5 million viewers when Barenaked Ladies with Steven Page reunited onstage to be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at 6:24 pm PT/9:24 pm ET. The awards have also been streamed 230,000 times to date in Canada and around the world on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and cbc.ca/watch.

Broadcast live from a sold-out Rogers Arena in Vancouver and produced by Insight Productions, the 2018 JUNO Awards marked the return of the annual awards to Canada's public broadcaster, as well as the first-ever simultaneous live broadcast of the JUNO Awards in all time zones across Canada and global livestream at cbcmusic.ca/junos.

On social media, #JUNOS was trending number one in Canada on Twitter during the live broadcast, with 290 million impressions overall. CBC Music garnered 22 million Twitter impressions during the broadcast, and was one of the most-mentioned accounts of the night***.

As the home for Canadian music, CBC is committed to shining a spotlight on homegrown music and artists all year with CBC Music’s extensive JUNO 365 content including the first annual Music Day on CBC on March 25, which featured special programming across all CBC platforms leading up to the awards broadcast. JUNO 365 content has garnered over 8 million video and page views across CBC Music’s Facebook, YouTube and cbcmusic.ca/junos pages to date since January 2018.

Opening with a special instrumental rendition of International Achievement Award and Album of the Year Winner Arcade Fire​’s “Everything Now,” CBC’s broadcast of the 2018 JUNO Awards featured 10 performances including Diana Krall's rendition of “L-O-V-E” with host Michael Bublé; Nunavut's The Jerry Cans performed their hit song “Ukiuq” (Northern Lights); Vancouver local Shawn Hook gave a special performance joined by The Vancouver Chinese Youth Orchestra honouring MusiCounts; fan favourite Arkells rocked the stage with their hit track “Knocking at the Door;”  and vocal powerhouse Lights performed a beautiful rendition of her hit “Giants” while honouring other female JUNO nominated artists with personalized graphic novel-style portraits, following a powerful introduction from Buffy Sainte-Marie and Grimes. Breakthrough Artist of the Year Jessie Reyez took to the stage to deliver a raw rendition of her breakout hit “Figures,” joined by R&B/Soul Recording of the Year winner Daniel Caesar, who performed “Freudian” and “We Find Love” with a 12-person choir earlier in the broadcast. Presenters Northern Touch Allstars: Rascalz, Checkmate, Kardinal Offishall, Thrust and Choclair surprised fans with a performance of their hit song “Northern Touch” to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking hip-hop release.

Canadian icon and Artist of the Year Gord Downie, who is now the most awarded male artist in the history of the JUNO Awards, was honoured in a moving tribute introduced by Kevin Drew and Pearl Wenjack, with Sarah Harmer and Barenaked Ladies' keyboardist Kevin Hearn performing “Introduce Yerself” and Dallas Green of City and Colour performing “Bobcaygeon,” later re-joined by Sarah Harmer.

The evening’s awards were anchored by the induction of eight-time JUNO Award winners Barenaked Ladies, alongside co-founder and singer-songwriter Steven Page, into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Presented by Geddy Lee, the recognition marked three decades as legendary performers and one of Canada’s most celebrated groups. Fans rejoiced as Barenaked Ladies and Page took the stage for a special one-time performance of “If I Had $1,000,000” with original member Andy Creegan and “One Week,” joined by Jann Arden, Jim Cuddy, The Jerry Cans, City & Colour, Eric McCormack, Northern Touch Allstars and more.
