NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR FILM DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION AND CBC ANNOUNCE NEW DIGITAL PRODUCTION FUND

St. John’s, NL (August 23, 2019) – The Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation (NLFDC) and CBC today announced a new funding partnership that will support the creation of short-form digital content developed by Newfoundland and Labrador creators.

The two organizations will each contribute up to $50,000, for $100,000 in total funding, towards digital content projects which will be showcased to national audiences on the public broadcaster’s extensive digital platforms, including the free CBC Gem streaming service.

“The NLFDC is very pleased to be partnering with CBC nationally in the creation of digital content by Newfoundland and Labrador talent,” said Dorian Rowe, Executive Director/Film Commissioner, NLFDC. “As more and more Canadians access media primarily online, it is very important to have great content reach audiences. We also know this opportunity will develop creative leaders for our industry.”

Applications can be made for short-length projects of various genres. The deadline for CBC to receive applications is September 20, 2019.

Projects will be selected once evaluated by CBC. The successful Newfoundland and Labrador production companies will then apply to the NLFDC to receive matching funds.

 “CBC is excited to partner with NLFDC to provide support and opportunity to creators in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Gave Lindo, Executive Director, OTT Programming, CBC. “This program allows us to work together with NLFDC in the creation and financing of original projects that will shine a spotlight on the diverse and talented storytellers across the province and bring their work to audiences across Canada through CBC’s digital platforms.”

To be eligible for the NLFDC/CBC Digital Production Program, projects must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must reside in Newfoundland and Labrador and be Canadian citizens or permanent residents;
  • Funds will be disbursed only to eligible NL companies and projects must qualify under other NLFDC eligibility criteria;
  • All qualified projects will be reviewed by CBC for assessment after the deadline, and greenlit based on creative merit. The notified creators will then apply to the NLFDC development program, with the final decision to be made by the NLFDC’s board.

When open, applications for NLFDC/CBC Digital Production Program will be available at cbc.ca/nlfdcfund.

For more information on applying to the NLFDC, please contact Suzanne Williams at the NLFDC office at (709) 739-1702 or suzanne@nlfdc.ca.
