CARLETON AND CBC NORTH COLLABORATE TO BRING YOUNG JOURNALISTS TO THE NORTH

November 27, 2020 – Carleton University’s journalism program has announced the creation of a paid internship for recent Carleton graduates in CBC newsrooms in Northern communities such as Iqaluit, Yellowknife and Whitehorse.

In partnership with CBC North, the three-year agreement will provide a paid summer internship each year, providing the journalist an opportunity to report on Canada’s north and its Indigenous people, and introduce CBC to new journalistic talent.

The project is the brainchild of long-time journalism professor at Carleton University, Mary McGuire, who also established a special fund to help cover the high cost of travel and accommodation for the students who go to work in Canada’s north.

“This new internship is an expression of our commitment to supporting young producers and hosts, said Mervin Brass, Senior Managing Director, CBC North. “There is value in showing the next generation of journalists the benefits of reporting from small communities, and we have created an environment of opportunity at CBC North.”

The internship opportunity is an important one for McGuire, who spent a number of years working in Whitehorse, primarily for CBC Radio and CBC’s Northern Service before joining Carleton’s journalism faculty in 1990.

“The opportunity I had, after being born and raised in Toronto, to launch my journalistic career in the North changed me forever,” McGuire said in her original proposal to the CBC, who also noted along with teaching her the value of local journalism; “It gave me a profound sense of wonder about this country.”
