LOREN MCGINNIS NEW HOST OF CALGARY EYEOPENER

CBC Calgary announces Loren McGinnis as the new host of the CALGARY EYEOPENER

The number one morning radio show in Calgary has its new voice, a veteran broadcaster from CBC North ready to explore the West's urban heartbeat.

McGinnis comes to Calgary from Yellowknife, where he has been the morning host of The Trailbreaker on CBC North Radio One in the Northwest Territories, Western Nunavut and Northern Alberta since 2013. McGinnis began as an intern at CBC Edmonton before working as a reporter, producer and host.

Calgary is a dynamic, friendly, important, can-do place. In many ways, it’s the engine for change and growth for the whole country,” says McGinnis. “I’ve loved my career in the North and I feel I can bring energy and new perspectives to listeners across Southern Alberta.”

McGinnis has broadcast from dozens of communities across the North, including live from an evacuation camp in Fort Simpson, after flooding displaced residents of the region. He won an RTDNA Award for that work.

McGinnis will bring that community focus to Calgary, says Helen Henderson, CBC Calgary’s Senior Director of Journalism and Programming. “In the two weeks he hosted the Eyeopener in September, Loren criss-crossed Calgary, meeting people and getting to know the city. He’s going to be an amazing addition to our Calgary Eyeopener team.”

“I love morning radio - getting to spend time with people first thing in the morning. Bringing news, stories and connecting everyone to their community is a huge privilege and responsibility,” says McGinnis. “I know people’s days can be made by how they get started. If I can help people wake up and get going in a good way, I’m doing my job.”

McGinnis will begin his hosting duties on the Calgary Eyeopener on December 12 replacing long-term Calgary Eyeopener host, David Gray, who retired in June.

CALGARY EYEOPENER can be heard weekdays from 6:00 to 8:30 a.m. on CBC Radio One and on CBC Listen. The show sets the agenda for the day, asking the questions that need to be answered and bringing compelling local stories to Calgarians.
