New to CBC Gem in June

Highlights of programs new to CBC Gem this June:

 

  • From the National Film Board of Canada, the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards Tributes 2026 (June 6) honour this year’s laureates, the recipients of the country’s highest distinction in the performing arts. 

 

  • New titles joining the Indigenous Stories Collection on June 1 include documentary Channel Originals Ni-Naadamaadiz: Red Power Rising, from Shane Belcourt and Tanya Talaga, and chronicling the 1974 Anishinaabe land-back occupation, with both English and Anishinaabemowin versions available, and Rising Through the Fray, following roller derby team Indigenous Rising as it welcomes a new generation of players set on changing the face of the sport. Archival feature doc The Stand recreates a historic Haida Nation protest. 

 

  • Also joining the Indigenous Stories Collection are the docuseries Treaty Road (June 1), a moving journey across treaty territories that unearths untold truths and brings Indigenous voices to the forefront; roundtable series Rematriate the Lens (June 1), amplifying the voices of 16 Indigenous women in film and television, including Maika Harper, Devery Jacobs, Anna Lambe, and Jennifer and Tamara Podemski; and the exclusive Canadian premiere of Australian miniseries Goolagong (June 12), celebrating the life of world champion tennis icon Evonne Goolagong.

 

  • New films joining the Indigenous Stories Collection include horror-comedy Seeds (June 5) from first-time feature director Kaniehtiio Horn; and New Zealand period drama We Were Dangerous (June 5), about three rebellious girls who bond together when sent to an island institution. 

 

  • Celebrating Pride Month, the Watch With Pride Collection includes Season 5 of CBC Arts’ Canadian Screen Award-winning interview series Here & Queer (June 1), hosted by Peter Knegt and featuring guests including John Early, Mae Martin and Priyanka; the BAFTA-Award winning UK drama It's A Sin (June 5), Russell T Davies’ (Queer As Folk) poignant story of five friends living and loving fiercely in the shadow of the 1980s AIDS crisis; UK lifestyle series Banjo & Ro’s Grand Island Hotel (June 19), following interior designer Banjo Beale and his husband Ro as they restore a crumbling Scottish mansion; and horror/fantasy film I Saw the TV Glow (June 12), following a teenager whose reality cracks after discovering a mysterious, late-night TV show. 

 

  • Acclaimed sci-fi drama Orphan Black (June 19 for Season 1 and June 26 for Season 2) stars Emmy Award-winner Tatiana Maslany as a street-smart con artist who is pulled into a conspiracy when she discovers that she’s a clone.

 

  • International series arriving in June include the second season of Mad Men (June 12), which finds Don Draper balancing a crumbling personal life and his top position at Sterling Cooper during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, and The Bold Type Season 3 (June 19) returns with new romance and professional shake-ups for Jane, Kat, and Sutton. 

 

  • Lifestyle programming highlights include CBC Life’s On the Inside (June 5), which tours the must-see homes of creative Canadians; the return of Junior Baking Show Season 11 (June 5), as host Harry Hill joins judges Liam Charles and Ravneet Gill for the tough task of finding Britain's best junior baker, and Grand Designs Australia Season 12 (June 12), following more brave home builders taking on the challenge of a lifetime.

 

  • New documentaries arriving in June include documentary Channel Original Prophet of Ecstasy (June 8), the story of how a would-be priest introduced MDMA to the world. 

 

  • CBC Kids series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir Season 1 (June 5) follows the adventures of two teenagers in Paris who become superheroes.

INDIGENOUS STORIES COLLECTION

 

Ni-Naadamaadiz: Red Power Rising

(90min, Documentary, directed by Shane Belcourt, Canada) *a documentary Channel Original*

English and Anishinaabemowin versions begin streaming Monday, June 1

Ni-Naadamaadiz: Red Power Rising explores a courageous stand taken in 1974 by a charismatic young revolutionary, Louis Cameron, and a group of Anishinabeg youth at Anicinabe Park in Kenora, Ontario. The 38-day land-back occupation included members of the American Indian Movement, who travelled with warriors from Cache Creek, B.C. as part of the Native Caravan, which ended on Parliament Hill after police violently moved to end their peaceful demonstration. There is only eight minutes of footage from this occupation, June but Ni-Naadamaadiz: Red Power Rising unearths this buried history. The documentary feature made its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2025. The film is written and directed by award-winning Métis filmmaker Shane Belcourt and written and produced by acclaimed journalist and author Tanya Talaga, whose four part docuseries The Knowing, debuted at TIFF in 2024.

 

Rematriate the Lens

Rematriate the Lens is a groundbreaking four-episode roundtable series amplifying the voices of 16 Indigenous women in film and television. Through raw, inspiring, and candid conversations, these women share their journeys, challenges, and triumphs in the entertainment industry. This series is about more than visibility—it’s about sovereignty and taking back the narrative. By centering Indigenous women’s voices, Rematriate the Lens highlights the barriers they face and the transformative power of their stories in reshaping the industry.

 

Rising Through the Fray

Indigenous Rising is the first team in roller derby history to break the barriers of representing a single country at the Roller Derby World Cup – igniting a movement that pulsates throughout the sport and within each other. Rising Through the Fray follows the team as it welcomes a new generation of players set on changing the face of roller derby – a sport that champions female empowerment and inclusivity but lacks diversity.

 

The Stand

In the fall of 1985, a small group of Haida people stood on a muddy logging road on Lyell Island—and refused to move. What followed was a landmark act of peaceful resistance that helped spark a nationwide reckoning around land, sovereignty and environmental justice. Drawing from over a hundred hours of electrifying archival footage, The Stand immerses us in the tension, courage and quiet humanity of that moment. Directed by Christopher Auchter (Now Is the Time), the film honours the Elders, activists and supernatural spirits who helped shape a new future for the Haida Nation—and for all of Canada. 

 

Treaty Road

While exploring his Métis ancestry, writer/director Saxon de Cocq discovered that his great grandfather (x3) was the Honorable James McKay, a prominent Métis from the Red River area. McKay was involved in many of the Numbered Treaty negotiations, eventually becoming a Treaty Commissioner. With mixed feelings, Saxon is driven to learn more... what was McKay’s involvement, his motivations for playing a pivotal role in this part of history? Saxon enlists the help of his friend Erin Goodpipe, a community educator and researcher with knowledge in treaty rights and together they travel to the location of the treaty signings and meet with the people who hold the knowledge on Treaty. 

 

Seeds

We Were Dangerous

In 1954 New Zealand, rebellious teens Nellie (Erana James) and Daisy (Manaia Hall) make a

daring escape from an institution for delinquent girls—only to be caught and sent to an even more remote facility on an isolated island. There, they are joined by Lou (Nathalie Morris), a well-to-do newcomer, and together they navigate a harsh new world under the strict rule of a devout and domineering Matron (Rima Te Wiata). Resistant to authority, the trio form an unbreakable bond, rejecting the institution’s rigid expectations and finding solace in their friendship. But as night falls, the island reveals its darker secrets—where reformation takes a sinister turn.
